Social Skills Group

Small Group Counseling Summary


Fall 2015, Seventh Grade
Goal:
The purpose of this group was to create a supportive environment where students could improve self-esteem
and build social skills.
Objectives for the group sessions:
Students will be able to list three group rules
Students will able to identify two ways that they can talk about themselves with others.
Students will be able to identify how they are feeling.
Students will be able to identify one way they can identify how another person is feeling.
Students will be able to identify one strategy for managing their feelings.
Students will be able to define body image.
Students will be able to list one way that body image effects their self-esteem.

Students will able to list three positive traits of a friend.


Students will be to identify one way to walk away from peer pressure.
Students will be able to identify one trait of a healthy friendship
Students will be able to identify one thing they learned in group
Students will be able to identify one way they can apply what they learned in-group to their daily
lives.

Results:
A group of seven students
completed the pre-test
and the post-test for the
group sessions. The
results indicated that the
sessions were beneficial
to students.

Impact:
After the eight group
sessions the students
knowledge of recognizing
feelings increased 15 %,
their knowledge of body
image increased 25 %,
their knowledge of peer
pressure increased 30%
and their knowledge of
healthy relationships
increased 25%.

Data Collection:
Data will be collected for the group based on pre and post scaling questions that ask the students to circle the number on the scale that
best describes them. A score of a 4 indicates they strongly agree, a score of a 3 indicates they agree, a score of 2 indicates they disagree,
and a score of a 1 indicates they strongly disagree. A score of 4 indicates 100 % mastery, a score of 3 indicates 75% mastery, a score of 2
indicates 25% mastery, and a score of 1 indicates 0 % mastery.
Implications: The pre-test data showed that students had a 65% mastery on recognizing feelings. This increased to 80% after the group
sessions. The data showed that the students had a 75% mastery of body image. This increased to 100% after the group sessions. The pretest data showed the students had a 63% mastery of peer pressure. This increased to 93% after the group sessions. The data indicated that
the students had a 60% mastery of healthy friendships. This increased to 85% after the group sessions. An improvement for this group
would be to add an additional group session addressing practical applications of recognizing feelings.
