Topic: Solve word problems using addition reasoning strategies
Essential Question: What addition strategies can we discover and practice when
discussing our responses to a word problem.
Standards

NJCCS 2.OA.A.1
NJCCS 2.OA.B.2
CC.MP.1
CC.MP.5

Learning Objectives and Assessments:

Learning Objectives
SWBAT use addition strategies to solve
a word problem involving multiple
steps.

SWBAT explain the addition strategies

used to solve a word problem involving
multiple steps.

Assessments
Visual check of students drawings,
equations and manipulatives to solve
the problem.
Visual check of thumbs up after each
step in the word problem.
Teacher will listen to students
responses during group discussion and
pair/group share about the strategies
used to solve the world problem.

Materials

Hippos Go Berserk by Sandra Boynton

Connecting manipulatives
Paper and pencil for every student
10 frames for every student
Counting chips

Pre-lesson assignments and/or prior knowledge:

The students will have previously practiced using addition strategies during Math
Meeting. They will have played addition games using cards in pairs and or in small
groups. During the game, the students have been asked to utilize all available
strategies to help them solve the addition problems, for example their hands,
counting the figures on the actual cards, doubles, up over 10 etc.

Lesson Beginning:
The teacher will instruct the students to meet on the magic carpet (reading rug).
After the students are seated the teacher will ask if anyone has ever heard the word
berserk. Using the students responses she will define berserk and relate it to a
wild party. As a group, the students and teacher will create a movement that
captures how a person at a party would look if they went berserk. The teacher will
instruct the students to not forget the movement because they will do it later. (5
minutes)
Instructional Plan:
Timetable & Transitions
0:5:00-0:12:00

The teacher will introduce the book and read the story aloud to the class. She
will act the story out changing the inflections in her voice to incite interest in
the story.
When the class gets to the middle of the book where all the hippos go berserk
the teacher will direct the class to go berserk.
She will refocus the class using whole brain teaching techniques such as
Eyes over here, eyes over there
The teacher will ask the following questions while showing the picture from
the book of the hippos going berserk.
o How many hippos do you think are at the party?
o What are some strategies you could use to find out the number of
hippos at the party?
o What are some tools you could use to figure out how many hippos are
going berserk at the party?
After discussing the students strategies the teacher will
continue reading the book
At the conclusion of the book the teacher will instruct the students to return
to their desks in small groups.
The teacher will get a container of connectable manipulatives and meet the
class back at their desks.

0:12:00-0:27:00

She will explain the procedure for the addition activity to the class:
o The teacher will read the book again page by page.
o After reading each page the students will use drawings, equations, 10
frames, their hands, and manipulatives to determine the correct
number of hippos currently at the party.
o After the students have completed their work she will instruct one
student to come to the front of the room and connect the appropriate
number of manipulatives
o The students will check their answers against the line of connected
manipulatives.
o The teacher will ask for a thumbs up if the students have arrived at the
correct answer.

The students will discuss the strategies used to solve the problem in
pairs/groups and with the class.
o After adding 6 and 7 hippos the group will pair share/group share to
discuss strategies used.
o After adding 8 and 9 hippos the teacher will ask the students to share
strategies with the class.

Differentiation:

Students will be able to pair share or group share In order to get ideas and
share ideas if needed.
Students will have access to manipulatives if creating or remembering a
strategy is too difficult.
Students will be able to check their answers after every step in order to stay
with the group.

Questions:

Has anyone heard the word berserk? Can anyone tell me what they think that
word means?
How many hippos do you think are at the party?
What are some strategies you could use to find out the number of hippos at
the party?
What are some tools you could use to figure out how many hippos are going
berserk at the party?

Classroom Management:

The teacher will use whole brain teaching techniques.

She will circulate the room during pair/small group discussions.
She check for a thumbs up to confirm correct answers.

Closure:
0:27:00-0:30:00

The teacher will hand out cut outs of a paper hippopotamus and instruct the
students to write out or illustrate one addition reasoning strategy they used
or learned about during the lesson.
The teacher will post the hippopotamus cut outs on the wall as a future
reference for addition reasoning strategies.
