PRIORITY CONCERN - NURSING DIAGNOSIS

Risk for drug use among youth, ages 11 to 14 years, in census tract 18.01 related to high
rates of drug abuse, availability of drugs within the home, negative role modeling,
impaired family processes, and poverty AEB key informant interviews of staff at the
Boys and Girls Club disclosing that parents offer marijuana to children and of
firefighters and church personnel stating that marijuana and heroin are commonly used
in the community.

LITERATURE SUPPORT FOR THE INTERVENTION

Study by Linnenbrink-Garcia, Patall, and Messersmith (2012)

Focus is on determining what creates situational interest (SI) or the engagement of students in a
lesson. SI affects how much information students will retain from a teaching.
Study Findings: there are four main factors which promote & increase SI:
1. Perceived student choice
2. Instructor approachability
3. Opportunities for student involvement
4. Student connections to real life
Connection to our presentation:
1. Students got to choose how to set up their BINGO cards
2. We were friendly and supportive
3. BINGO game got students involved
4. Sharing stories and ideas relating marijuana to real life was encouraged
