Music Education Philosophy

Music education is a necessary component for a well-rounded

education. Studying music has many benefits that not only affect each
students well being, but can also positively affect society as a whole.
Music provides order to society and to self, it helps develop skills that
can be used in daily life and in a professional setting, and engages the
mind, body, and soul.
In order to understand the necessity of music education, we have
to understand how it benefits society and self. One way it can benefit
society is by helping individuals develop emotions and self-expression.
Music develops emotions and self-expression because it is a means of
creativity and relating to others through the messages created with it.
Emotional development is needed to help individuals relate to others
through verbal and non-verbal forms of communication. Because of the
cultural and emotional aspects of music, it can also help foster
understanding of different people and their beliefs. Participation in
music benefits society because it forms a community for individuals
and larger groups of people. This is particularly important because
music in these settings can reflect different beliefs of individuals and
connect people through other similar tastes and cultures.
Aside from emotional and social benefits to music, skills attained
in a musical experience can be applied to daily life and a professional
setting. For example, music events such as concert, competitions, and
festival attendance require a sense of punctuality that can be directly
applied to the workplace. In addition, the amount of practicing that is
required of music students demands organizational skills, selfdiscipline, and time management skills needed for any profession. The
performance aspect of music can also be great in aiding public
speaking skills or presentation skills required in the workplace. Lastly,
performing in an ensemble with others requires cooperation and
teamwork that is needed for any setting that involves working or
interacting with others.
Music is one of the few activities that engage the mind, body,
and soul. Having an education in music can help deepen this
experience and make it meaningful because students will be able to
better understand what they are performing or listening to.
Performance, composition, listening, and other mediums of music
require thought, emotion, and action that can occur simultaneously
and in different forms. Music can occur in different mediums that can
engage anyone with any level of experience such as listening,
performing, composing, and through other art forms such as dance and
poetry- all of which can happen at different skill levels and to different
degrees. A well-rounded education includes a music education because
it benefits society through skills attained, emotional development, and

self-awareness, which can directly be applied to any life situation both

professional and personal.
