Green Helping Hand
With the growing cancer of the city, it is important to stop and think how far civilization
can push nature back until there will be nothing else left to push back. Hiking towards the
Cahuenga Peak, near the Hollywood sign, was a magnificent moment to experience, taking in all
of the beauty that nature gives us, bringing us closer to nature. Some people dont realize the
beauty nature gives us but see it as nothing but potential property which has caused deforestation
among many forest and parks. Deforestation is a permanent demolishing of forests to use the
space for other needs such as buildings. If we continue destroying these parks for our own cause
of constructing buildings, there is going to be a point where theres going to be nothing else left.
A solution to this problem could be to construct a building called the Green Thumb in Bell
Gardens to teach children about the importance of nature at a young age so they value this true
beauty upon growing up. Making a green house in Bell Gardens would be excellent to influence
nature upon people since its the only building around. This would help them get closer to nature
developing a love for nature that is now lost.
Nature is a gift that everyone should be able to experience. For example, I myself have
experienced nature by going on hikes. Starting at the old zoo from Griffith Park didnt seem so
hard until my older brother pointed out the steep hill we had to climb. It was no ordinary route; it
was his own pathway cutting through the enormous mountain which saved us a few hours. A

couple hours passed and we finally reached the highest, steepest point of the mountain. There
were only a few people with us on the peak who had actually made it all the way since people
dont really know that you can make it past the Hollywood sign reaching this peak called
Cahuenga Peak. Cahuenga Peak has a beautiful view, many tall, green trees everywhere with
different plants causing a good scent in the air leading down to this amazing view of the city. The
only problem is that it looks like theres more buildings than nature. Having this fascinating
experience shows me the values of nature and how people should get involved with it more to
help stop deforestation.
This excruciatingly long, difficult trail brings us out of this era of watching and makes us
into doers. No matter how amazing it might look on television or in a magazine, nothing beats
actually being there; actually seeing it with our own eyes. It was like nothing I had seen before,
not only was it the city of Los Angeles which looked quite small once up there, but it was all the
neighboring cities which were quite amazing. The hike helped me appreciate nature looking over
everything, looking at exactly how beautiful it truly is but also how we have come away from it.
Although it was amazing to go hiking the only problem was on some areas, the trees were burned
and it was awful to see. We began to realize why people are fighting to preserve the wildlife as
even at the end of the trail at the peak of the mountain, there was a house just sitting at the
bottom of the mountain a few feet in front of us. Apparently there are deer up here but I only
spotted one and I guess we got lucky because everyone was so at awe in seeing two deer
including me which made me realize how disconnected we really are from nature. This extensive
path, the path less taken has really opened my eyes as it is a great adventure for not only the
surrounding community but everyone to embark as it is quite remarkable to journey up and some

Soto 3

people could really use this. This is the reason why I believe we need an eco-friendly building to
promote our well-being of our environment.
Some people have completely stopped caring for deforestation happening in the city of
Los Angeles and all throughout the world. In the growth and advancement of our very own city,
we are unaware of the harm we are placing on the little that is left of this beauty which is nature.
Deforestation is the permanent destruction of forests in order to make the land available for
other uses (Bradford). We are the ones who are destroying nature through our greediness for
more land to construct more buildings, cutting down trees, clearing out the forest. We need to
start opening our eyes for us to realize what we are doing is wrong and not to only protect the
wildlife but also protect our world that we are ruining for our selfish needs. Nowadays, to truly
experience nature, we need to drive a few hours to simply relieve ourselves of the business and
stress the city brings and even then, one will still find houses scattered across the terrain.
Los Angeles has face many different problems such as in the book Twilight in Los
Angeles, 1992 have to do with racial discrimination which is a big deal especially back then but
another main one is deforestation. Which some people are ignoring and permanently destroying
it for their selfish needs and wants. One solution to this growing problem is to construct a
building called the Green Thumb in Bell Gardens that would help children get closer to natures
beauty. The Green Thumb would be a perfect building to construct to illustrate how much nature
is important to our lives. Bell Gardens is surrounded by only building and have no nature in sight
making this place a perfect area to construct the Green Thumb. Creating this building would help
Bell garden to get closer and get more involved with nature. The Green Thumb would look like a
greenhouse that has no chemicals inside or around and covered in see-through glass walls for
everyone to see the growing plants inside as the light shines through it. The building would be

Soto 4

right in the middle of Bell Gardens with lots of different kinds of extraordinary flowers that few
people have ever seen such as Plumeria, Magnolia, Orchids, mostly any flowers that have bright
color to attract peoples attention. Also having these tall, green trees around the building to make
people have the experience of walking into a forest. This ecofriendly building would help people
get into nature even more and we would work to stop all of this destruction of nature.
All the children would be involved with planting trees, trying to be ecofriendly by
recycling; could interact with the Tree People and get a more personal experience for one self.
Tree People are located in Coldwater Canyon Ave., Franklin Canyon Dr. and Mulholland Dr., but
it could be far and too difficult for some people to travel all the way over there. Having the
Green Thumb in Bell Gardens would be convenient for others to learn and get involved. The
Tree People inspire people to think green and to help make the world a better place. We can take
the children to meet the Tree People to get more ideas for the children and also have a field trips
to the mountains for them to go hiking; to visualize natures surroundings and get as close to
nature as possible.
Having a closer eco building to the city would have a good benefit for all the children in
not only becoming eco-friendly but also just having fun with nature. To achieve everything that
we are trying to create, we have to start small with a small group planting at least one tree as it
will be the start to this foundation. After a while people will start joining, collaborating and
helping out and sooner or later, we will have a big community involved with Mother Nature. The
Tree People illustrated, We waste precious dollars trying to fix these problems with even more
building. But the answer is simple: bring nature back to our city streets and neighborhoods, and
let nature do its job. The Green Thumb would be a success because showing everyone what we
have done to our planet and how bad we are hurting it could cause people to really open up their

Soto 5

eyes making people want to be involved more. Having different buildings around the world that
involve helping nature would have a faster result on stopping deforestation but we have to start
now.
Having a building that is eco-friendly could add good vibes for everyone to appreciate
and join the group. The more people we get, the more people will start to love nature and take
care of it. National Geographic demonstrated, A more workable solution is to carefully manage
forest resources by eliminating clear-cutting to make sure that forest environments remain intact.
The cutting that does occur should be balanced by the planting of enough young trees to replace
the older ones felled in any given forest. Meaning if we do cut trees down we should plant other
trees for them to grow so were just adding more than taking out and damaging the world. It
would benefits the community and everyone as trees are vital for us to breathe. We need oxygen
to breathe, to live, and without plants how are we going to be able to get oxygen to breathe. It
also benefits us with all of its natural beauty it brings to us and could be a perfect place to just be
by yourself, away from all the technology and problems that the city brings to us. To have this
feeling and all the good things it give us, we need to stop cutting down tree or just start planting
more trees so we dont end up with nothing.
Being involved with nature is one of the best things in life and one could start by hiking,
visualizing everything that nature contributes. All of us need to start helping stop deforestation
and one doesnt need to do something that big, it could be something as small as simply wasting
less paper or giving a donation to organizations specializing in helping these parks. All these
small deeds could make a big difference for our planet. With the help of everyone, we can
construct a green house in Bell Gardens and that would be a wonderful influence to children or
anyone in fact to start admiring, being grateful for all that nature has award us with. Creating this

Soto 6

building and helping our world would help us stop the cancer from growing, meaning to stop
houses or buildings from taking over nature before it is all gone and too late to make a
difference.

Green Helping Hand (Draft)
Hiking toward the Cahuenga Peak was a magnificent moment to realize and take in all
the beauty that nature gives us, it brings us closer when we experience everything that it gives us.
Some dont realize the beauty that nature gives them and by that we are slowly causing
deforestation to our forest and parks. Meaning if we stop caring for our national parks and keep
destroying animals homes for our own cause of constructing buildings, theres going to be that
one point were theres not going to be no more nature around us. A solution could be
constructing a building in Bell Gardens to teach children about nature and for them to get close
can help slowly develop of loving nature once again. With the growing cancer of the city, have
you ever stopped to think how far we can push nature back until there will be nothing else left to
push back?
Starting at the old zoo from Griffith Park didnt seem so hard until my older brother
pointed out this steep hill we had to climb, it was no ordinary route, and it was his own pathway.
Couple hours pass and we finally reached to the highest, steepest mountain there was. Theres
few people on the top of the peek because some dont really know that you can go further from
the Hollywood sign, which is called Cahuenga Peak. In the distance, the coast is viewable. Hills

for miles with city in the front and city behind us. On the left, from a far length you can spot the
beautiful, tall buildings of Downtown LA that shine from the suns light. The Hollywood water
reservoir looks to be running lower than usual. A deer and its fawn climbing up the hill across
from us. Different kinds of birds flying and gliding by the wind. Competition among the Hawks,
flying around the hills, searching for food. While a yellow and green rescue helicopter passes
over the hills towards Los Angeles. There are houses slowly overtaking the side of the hills like a
cancer taking over the nature that once was. There is a scent of freshness in the air that we cant
get around where we live because from all the pollution that surrounds the city. Its a bit cloudy
but the air was humid while climbing up but when we arrived to the top the sun came out and hit
directly towards us but once we were in the shade, it was the most refreshing feeling I have ever
felt. It is remarkably peaceful that you can hear the wind moving through the trees and the sound
of animals above and in the distance. Birds were chirping, lizards were crawling around through
the leaves in the ground. Lots of flys and small black bugs were flying all over our face if we
stopped moving and the crickets were chirping illustrating how quiet and serene it was just only
listening to nature and nothing else.
