Areas of Developmental Domains Lesson Plan

Domain Activity
Domain Areas:
Cognitive Math (Application, Number Sense, Mental math)
Reading (Listening, Literacy, Language)
Physical /Motor skills- Movement (waving the answer to a number around, standing up,
instead of sitting and listening)
Instructions- students are to listen to poems in this book, while standing and when asked
a question they are to wave answer around with hands, then they
are asked to say the words of the riddle/poem out loud. This
activity incorporates many different developmental domains, not
just math, and reading

Book Title: The Grapes Of Math

Author : Greg Tang
Illustrator: Harry Briggs
Book ISBN: 978-0439598408
Grade level: 3RD
TEKS :
(3.4) Number and operations. The student applies mathematical process standards to develop and use strategies and methods for
whole number computations in order to solve problems with efficiency and accuracy. The student is expected to:
(E) represent multiplication facts by using a variety of approaches such as repeated addition, equal-sized groups, arrays,
area models, equal jumps on a number line, and skip counting;
(F) recall facts to multiply up to 10 by 10 with automaticity and recall the corresponding division facts;
(G) use strategies and algorithms, including the standard algorithm, to multiply a two-digit number by a one-digit number.
Strategies may include mental math, partial products, and the commutative, associative, and distributive properties;
(H) determine the number of objects in each group when a set of objects is partitioned into equal shares or a set of objects
is shared equally;
(K) solve one-step and two-step problems involving multiplication and division within 100 using strategies based on
objects; pictorial models, including arrays, area models, and equal groups; properties of operations; or recall of facts.

Keywords: multiplication, division, groups, repeated addition, sharing

Objective of Book: words, pictures, and numbers to provide a written explanation
reflecting their understanding of multiplication also use patterns in multiplication

Areas of Developmental Domains Lesson Plan

What is this book about? Basically this is a book that has different math poems in each
page,and it shows a picture of an animal/object/fruit/insect and asks the reader what is the
total of each in the form of a riddle .The end of the book includes the answer to each
math poem .In this book children use a variety of creative methods, such as finding
patterns, grouping, and using advanced problem-solving skills. It is good because this
story strongly encourages the use of addition, subtraction and multiplication while
recognizing arrays, rows and patterns this will help build students understand
mathematical relationships better. In this book it has different riddles, which are basically
like, different math sort of problems linked to it, I like how the author, Tang provides the
reader with a complete solution for each poem in the back of the book. The pictures in
this book are very appealing to both boys and girls, so I think children will really like this
book!
Excerpt example of a math poem/question found in this book isHow many fish are in this class, answer quick and you will pass,
Heres a hint, a little clue, when counting , just look askew(TANG)
Then on the back of the book, where the answers to the poems are, it shows how to find
your answer, it says ;
If you look diagonally there are 4 rows of 4 fish
So 4+4+4+4=16 or 4x4=16 ,so there are 16 fish total in this class(TANG)
This problem in the book can tie in to the topic of repeated addition, as well as
multiplication.
Another poem found in this book:
How many dots adorn this fan?
Add them quickly if you can.
Instead of seeing groups of threes,
Count by fives and its a breeze(TANG)
Answer = There are 3 groups of 5 dots
5+5+5=15 or 3x5=15 (TANG)
Again like the other poem this deals with repeated addition, grouping, and multiplication.
So basically, thats how the book is, each page includes a group of stuff and asks for the
total, in the format of a riddle!

Opinion to Book lesson plan

This is such an interesting and fun book, it is great lesson to incorporate with
children when teaching them about repeated addition and how it ties in with
multiplication, and grouping .I find it cool how this book ties in multiplication with
patterns, and grouping, this is a great book that is understandable for children. I also like
the illustrations done by Harry Briggs I find they would appear very pleasing to children,
and young children.
