SUSHI GONE CHIC

KO Sushi Lounge & Bar , the InterContinental Bali Resort’s Japanese restaurant, unveils
its newly refurbished cocktail selection and new design. KO Sushi Lounge & Bar has taken
its refined Japanese aesthetic and improved upon it, creating a sumptuous new identity. The
interior space has been opened up by clever and innovative use of interior design to generate
warmth and peace. Up to 50 guests can choose to enjoy a relaxed and informal gathering
in the generously cushioned gold armchairs, or a more traditional dining experience at a
table setting. The Japanese design ethic is typified by oversized hanging lanterns and carved
wall lighting panels shedding a gentle light on the floor to ceiling columns and recesses in
layered stone. A stunning collection of glassworks complements the space’s collection of
local and international artwork. The ultra modern and beautiful swirling abstracts of the sushi
bar backsplash provide a dynamic backdrop to the fresh array of fine seafood on display.

FORM, LIGHT
AND EXOTIC
A dual painting exhibition featuring the works
of Pranoto and Auly Kastari is being held through
April 20 at the Terasseni Gallery on Jalan Raya
Nyuh Kuning 1 in Pengosekan, Ubud. Pranoto is
a figurative artist of Javanese origin who has spent
much of his life in Ubud. He settled on the island in
the early 1970s as part of a diaspora of Indonesian
artists eager to rediscover in Bali aspects of a cultural
past that had disappeared from their island of origin.
Kastari was born in Semarang and is a recent
resident of Bali. In his works, human representation is
almost exclusively female, and female representation
always laden with sexual connotations.

KERAMAS KINGS
Nusa Lembongan’s Ediana Putra claimed victory at the first event
of the three-part Rusty Gromfest series held at Keramas Beach in late
February. Ediana was challenged by Jeren Kiring, Nyoman Satria ‘Blacky’,
and Mansur Ramlin in the 20-minute final, but managed to edge his way
into the lead and hold it for the win. In the Under 14 division, emerging
talents surfaced with Agus Saputra, Komang Bereng, and Komang
‘Komo’ Sastrawan as standouts. The eventual winner was Agus Saputra,
but ‘Komo’ impressed Head Judge Tipi Jabrik enough to score a new
surfboard courtesy of Coca-Cola Indonesia. The overall Under 16 series
champion will be awarded an all-expenses-paid trip to Australia to
compete in the 15th annual Rusty Gromfest at Lennox Head in July this
year. The second stop of the series was at Pererenan, Canggu on March
28. (Photos courtesy: Freedom Photoworks) www.isctour.com

TENDER LOVING CARE IN TUBAN

March 5 a fortunate band of members and guests resisted the lure of trade
shows and sales missions to Berlin and other exotic source markets to enjoy a
super culinary experience in the lovely atmosphere of the ballroom at Holiday Inn
Resort Baruna in Tuban. A spicy Balinese salad - a creative mix of seaweeds from
Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida with a kick of chilli turmeric and coconut was
followed by a copious serving of Pak Wayan’s awesome sop Buntut, Javanese
oxtail soup – the perfect blend of traditional spices and raw ingredients simmered
for hours with TLC. Dessert was steamed cassava cake - a twisted version of the
Indonesian classic with a hint of rum served with west Javanese black rice sorbet
