Running Head: Fingerplay

Fingerplay Song: Row, Row, Row Your Boat

Skills:

Through this activity children are gaining a sense of purpose and are apart of their
classroom community. The pairs of students will work together during the song and will
have fun as well. Students are also using kinesthetic learning by doing and getting their
heart rate up.

Supplies:

The teacher will need the song lyrics (if they do not already know the song) and will need
open space for the students to row the boat.

Instructions:

First, go over the song as a class and ask them what some movements they might do with
this song. Next, ask one student to help you show them what they will be doing in
partners. Then, have students pair up or have their pairs already made up for them and
join you in an open space. Students will get in rowing position and row along to the beat
of the song.

Why:

Running Head: Fingerplay

When a student has a sense of community in their classroom, they feel purpose and safe.
By being included, students are able to open and up and learn without worrying about
judgment.

Row Your Boat

Invite each child to find a partner. Have the children face their partners
in a sitting position and hold hands. Partners hold hands and move
forward and backward together as you sing the song.
Row, row, row your boat
Gently down the stream

Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily

Life is but a dream.

Running Head: Fingerplay

Variation: Sing the song slow and move slow then sing the song fast
and move fast.
