Finger Play Assignment

Finger Play Assignment: Students will complete and share activities that will validate the
understanding of the foundations of ECE within the scope of planning appropriate
programs and curriculum for both individual children and for a specific age group. These
activities include: Presentation of a developmentally appropriate song, game or finger
play.
1. Summary or Description of Activity
Materials: Copy of the Finger Play Rhyme I Can't Wait for Pumpkin Pie, Paper
pumpkins (optional can also use fingers).
Summary: Introduce the finger play to the class (tip- Display the lyrics on the board) and
go through the movements with the class. After the practice run, go through the finger
play together as a class with the paper pumpkins on your fingers (can have the students
make their own to go along or just have a teacher set). As a part of the conclusion remind
students that pumpkin pie is a traditional Thanksgiving food (to relate the finger play to
Thanksgiving).
2. Age of Child/Type of Group for Activity:
Age: Kindergarten (5-6 years)
Type of Group: as a class
3. Connection to a Developmental Benchmark or Standard:
TEKS: Kindergarten
Theater- (4) Historical/cultural heritage. The student relates theatre to history, society, and
culture. The student is expected to:
(A) Play and replay real and imaginative situations of various cultures

Social Studies- (1) History. The student understands that holidays are celebrations of
special events. The student is expected to:
(B) identify customs associated with national patriotic holidays such as parades and
fireworks on Independence Day.
4. What you learned, what questions you still have:
Learned: First off I learned what a finger play is. I was not really sure what it was before
I looked it up. Then I realized that I had done them before and just did not know what
they were called. I also noticed that there is pretty much one for every occasion. I also
learned that Thanksgiving is a patriotic holiday even though it is not usually thought of as
one like the Fourth of July.
Questions: I do not really have any questions about this assignment.
