My Self Reflection
The class English 113B was a very interesting journey to me this semester. I have
developed my skills in English language and this class had made me learn more about the subject
knowledge. Being an international student I was very bad in writing the essays and implementing
ideas and thoughts related to the topic of the essay. This class helped me in grabbing efficient
knowledge and analyzing the topics that were given to me for the essay. The professor of this
class has helped every student of the class to get more particular in their writings and their ideas
that they used in essay.
As English is the international language and every subject has the explanation and the
concepts of the academics in English language. It is necessary for a student to gain knowledge
about the English language and understand the high vocabulary. I use to memorize some of the
high vocabulary words and tried to implement these high vocabulary words in my essay. The
professor of the class is very particular about students of the class using the proper grammar and
proper sentence formation. The professor of the class appreciates the students who ask doubts in
the class and she explains in detail about the doubt. This friendly nature of the professor helped
me to develop good academic knowledge in English class.

I never had English language in my schooling as I studied every subject in Arabic in
Kuwait. English was a new language to me and I had to work hard to increase my speaking,
writing and reading skills of the subject. I use to practice every tough word with memorizing the
spellings and with memorizing the meaning and synonyms of the word. This helped me in using
synonyms in the essay, by replacing the word with its synonyms. I have developed my skills in
using the punctuation marks after every necessary sentences. I use to write some important
points which were explained in the class and I use to take some help from my classmates to
understand what the professor informed about the essays.
The syllabus of the course was completing the task of two essays with two drafts. The
first draft was a rough one and the second draft was the final draft. The errors which should be
modified was mentioned in the professor comments and then we had to submit the essay again to
the professor as the final draft. These comments helped in improvising the writings of the essays
and implementing the thoughts of the topic in the essays. This class has provided important
details to students and made the students to develop their own qualities in writing the essays. The
first essay of the class was to analyze the novel Watchmen which was one of the famous novel
and generally used in English classes.
My second essay of the class was on the topic, The Angry White Black Guy that was
related to the novel and I had to choose one of the five topics to write about the novel and
analyze what the author was relating to the readers. The act of racism was clearly defined in the
novel and the support of the blacks were clearly mentioned with some interracial activities
carried out in these present days. These readings of the novels helped me to take specific ideas
and quotes which would be related to the general life of the humans living in United States.

The major components which I learnt from the class was the MLA formatting and using
quotes in the essays. The main difference between analysis and the summary of the article was
explained in the class and the professor clearly mentioned the comments for the students who
wrote the summary for the analysis essay. I have learnt how to describe the argumentative thesis
of the essay and the importance of the thesis in the essay. The main idea of the essay is explained
in the thesis statement of the essay. The thesis statement should be specific about the topic and
should be understandable by the reader. Therefore English 113B has improved my skills in
understanding the concept of what a reading tries to convey the message to the readers and these
skills may be useful to me in the future for my studies and help me in writing the term papers and
other reports in my future classes.
