Mini Lesson Planning Tool for Integrating Technology

Title of Lesson: Circle Time

Curriculum / Content Area: Math
Grade Level: K/1
PURPOSE / OBJECTIVES:
Students will count aloud starting from number 23 to number 30 using the calendar as a
reference.
Students will make a choice about which holiday is in the next month by dragging their
name on the whiteboard into the correct category.

CURRICULUM STANDARDS:
Math: 2.) Count forward beginning from a given number within the known sequence
(instead of having to begin at 1). [K-CC2]
Technology Standard: 3.) Demonstrate correct posture and finger placement while using
a technology system

ACTIVITIES:
Engagement:
The teacher will already have videos to be played pulled up and ready to be played. The
teacher will play the good morning song (Come and join us at our place), macarena months,
and days of the week. Teacher welcomes students and welcomes them to group. Good
morning boys and girls, welcome to group this morning! Today I am going to be doing calendar,
so we are going stay in our seats and follow directions just like we do when Ms. Bennett does
calendar. Lets all begin our morning by signing together our circle time songs! Teacher and
students participate in singing songs and doing motions to songs they do each morning.
Teaching:
Teacher transitions and has students direct their attention to the calendar. Great job singing and
doing your motions boys and girls! Now we are going to begin with calendar. I know it has been
a while since we just got back from break, but lets think about it together and I know we can
get it! So which month are we in right now? Teacher provides wait time and then calls on
Student A. Thats right we are in November! Last week we had Thanksgiving Break. What kinds
of Thanksgiving things have we been doing at school this month? Teacher calls on different
students and provides opportunity for them to share. Great job sharing boys and girls we have
been talking about Thanksgiving History with the pilgrims, indians, turkey, and feasts. Now I
want to hear about what your break last week. We are going to go around the circle and each
of you can share one thing about your break last week. Students have opportunity to share and
connect what they have been learning in school to real life. Isnt it great how what we do at
home can also connect to what we are doing in school. Last month was October and we talked
about Halloween and pumpkins and the season of fall! Teacher references calendar. Now if we
look over here at our calendar we can see that today is the last day in the month November! So
last month was October, this month is November, and next month is December! Tomorrow we
will talk more about the month December. Teacher then transitions to what day it is. Okay boys
and girls so we can look at the calendar and see that today is November 30. Teacher points to
calendar to reference and models the skill for students. Now I want us to practice our counting
together. We are going to start from one week ago on November 23 and count until today. You
all count along with me! 23, 24, 25.30. Great job counting boys and girls! That was great!!

Opportunity for Practice:

Teacher then transitions to what day it is. Okay boys and girls so we can look at the calendar
and see that today is November 30. Teacher points to calendar to reference and models the
skill for students. Now I want us to practice our counting together. We are going to start from
one week ago on November 23 and count until today. You all count along with me! 23, 24,
25.30. Great job counting boys and girls! That was great!! Now that we are all done counting
we are going to talk again about the holidays we discussed earlier. Teacher has flipchart pulled
up on the smartboard. So here on the board there are three pictures! I am going to call you up
one at a time and you are going to move your name from the bottom of the board into one of
the sections of a holiday we have already learned about this year. Photos on the board will
include a pumpkin, turkey, and snowman. Does anyone have questions before we take turns?
Teacher calls students up one by one until each student has an opportunity.
Assessment:
Teacher will assess students using the checklist below through taking anecdotal notes on each
student throughout lesson. In the columns with objectives there will be a check or x based on
student performance based on teachers observation.

Closure:
Teacher compliments class on job well done. You all did such a great job at group today! I love
how you all participated and followed directions. We practiced our counting and got to talk
about all the different holidays this time of year. Does anyone have any questions based on
what we did during group today
Materials and Resources:
Promethean Board
Safari Montage Videos
Flipchart for students to interact with
calendar

Reflection:
I was really looking forward to this lesson because I was excited about the opportunity to work
with a larger group in this setting rather than just one on one or small groups. This lesson
allowed me to practice differentiation on a larger scale through asking a variety of questions
varying depending on students individual levels. Overall it I feel that it went well. Based on
feedback from my cooperating teacher I was able to include all students while meeting their
needs and also allowed them to use technology. One of the challenges I encountered during
this lesson was ensuring that students were seated and a part of group when they werent
directly participating. At this placement I have gotten to see many examples of real world
connections through the students studying different traditions and holidays. I enjoyed getting to
use what they have already learned to further expand on their knowledge. If I were to do this
lesson again I would consider doing the technology component in small groups or one on one
while other students are working independently because some students needed more
assistance than others.
Differentiation:
Students will be called on to answer certain questions based on varying abilities. All students
will receive adequate wait time to answer questions.

Answer the following questions:

1. Do I know how to use the technology tool(s) that will be used by my students?
Yes I have had practice using the smart board many times in my clinical experiences.
2. What technology skills do my students already have that are needed for this lesson?
My students have already practiced interacting with the smart board and using it for various tasks.
3. What technology skills will they need to learn to complete this lesson successfully?

setting available for my students to use?

5.

What tools and resources will I need? (List of all Web sites, specific software and hardware,
and other needs.)
The materials and resources are listed above.
6. How much time do I need to allow for this lesson?
I would allow 30-45 minutes for this lesson.
7. Who can help me with the planning and/or implementation of this lesson?
