Evaluating Artworks :
Guided discussion based on book
Guided reflection
Exhibiting Artworks (be thoughtful) :
Students will be able to show their pieces at parent conference night.
Assessment Procedures : (assessments used before, during, and after the
lesson)
Before : Teacher asks students what they know about line. What is a line? How
many kinds of lines are there?
During: Teacher observation of student work
After : (please attach assessment tool to end of this lesson plan)
Lesson Structure and Procedures : The sequence of events of the lesson elements .Please list each sequence
by day or class period. Consider :

Management
Day / Class #1
Engagement / Opening : Lines That Wiggle read aloud
Connection to Prior Learning: What is a line? How can we make lines? Do you see a line in this room?
Procedures / Guided Practice:
1. Students enter the art room with bubbles in their mouths and hands behind their backs. They sit criss-cross on
the carpet.
2. Teacher introduces the word line to students and asks them leading questions.
3. Lines that Wiggle read aloud.
4. Students are asked to name some lines they just heard about. Teacher draws them on an anchor chart.
5. Teacher models how to make different lines out of pipe cleaners and then stick them into the sculpture base.

6. Students go to table seat. Supplies are passed out, and they explore with the pipe cleaners to make their own
sculptures with 5 different kinds of line.
Clean-up / Conclusion: Students clean area, put sculpture in safe area, and walk back to their carpet spot. Teacher
leads class in self reflections (What kinds of lines did you use?). If time, students view a piece by Wassily Kandinsky
and name lines they see in the painting.
Resources and Supplies :
- Lines that Wiggle
- Paper, marker, and easel
- Floral foam bases
- Pipe cleaners
- Print by Wassily Kandinsky
Technology : (instructional and/or assistive technology incorporated into the
lesson to enhance instruction and student learning)
Differentiation / Accomodations / Modifications / Increase in Rigor : (to help
meet the needs of all learners, learning differences, cultural and language
differences, etc.)
Differentiation : Students will be given verbal, visual, and hands on learning opportunities throughout the lesson.
In addition, students may explore with their art materials in the way they choose within the boundaries of the
lesson.
Accomodations / Modifications : If students are not able to work with bending the pipe cleaners, they may draw
their lines on paper, or use fewer pipe cleaners than other students.
Increase in Rigor : Students who need an extra challenge will be asked to draw their sculpture once they have
completed it.
Classroom Management : (strategies consistent with the learning needs of the lesson that also meet student
behavior needs to help keep students actively engaged)(includes behavior management plan, time management,
transitions, and lesson/class wrap-up)
Attention grabber:
- Chime
- Clap rhythms
- Count down (5 seconds until I see all students looking at me4 seconds until all students have a
bubble in their
mouth3 seconds to have hands in your lapand 2and 1)
Class Rules:
- Listen and follow directions the first time

- Raise your hand before speaking or leaving your seat

- Respect your classmates and your teacher
- Keep your hands, your feet, and other objects to yourself
Consequences:
- 1. Verbal Redirection
- 2. Safe Seat (time out in a spot away from the class about 15 minutes or until student can calm
down)
- 3. Buddy Room (time out in a neighboring classroom) + call parents or note home
Time Management:
- 10 minutes = entering, rules, intro, modeling
- 35 - 40 minutes = independent work
- 5 10 minutes = clean up and line up
Extensions : (activities for early finishers that extend students understanding of and thinking about the learning
objectives by applying their new knowledge in a different way)
- Students who finish quickly may draw the sculpture they have made. They will be asked to make
their drawing as detailed as they can make it, and then to add colors as they see them in their sculpture.

Follow-Up to Todays Lesson : (quick activity for review or building on todays learning that will deepen student
understanding and interconnect concepts; may be incorporated in next session or throughout the unit)
- Students will review different kinds of lines by identifying lines in various artworks.
Reflection : (if you had the chance to re-teach this lesson, what would you do differently ?)(complete this section
in final draft after lesson has been taught)
During this lesson, I noticed that the extension was necessary for the entire class. I thought that the
kindergarteners would take more time to explore with the pipe cleaners, but they were ready to move on after
using 5 pipe cleaners. The drawing was an engaging activity for most Kindergarteners and helped them to build
observational drawing skills.
If I taught this lesson again, I would include a more active activity for line review after reading the book. The
students were restless after sitting through a book reading and needed a physical activity that involved their whole
body in learning.
Learning Statement : (a summary of what has been taught in this lesson and its purpose to be displayed with
the artwork; to inform the school community of the learning involved in the lesson)(bold or italicize key concepts or
vocabulary) KCAI Addition

Kindergarten students learned about the element of art line by reading the book Lines that Wiggle by Candace
Whitman. They created their own sculptures by exploring the many different kinds of line that can be made.
