Program Guide
The General Arts and Science program provides the student with the opportunity to:
1. Design ongoing strategies and plans for personal, academic and career
development.
2. Acquire specific academic skills which are needed for success in a future
program of studies.
3. Develop, through general knowledge gained in a wide range of subjects,
insight into both self and society.
4. Extend flexibility and clarity of both thought and expression in order to
increase communications competence to a level required by business and
industry.
5. Understand and utilize critical thinking processes and problem solving
techniques
6. Examine and evaluate various aspects of our changing society to assist in
developing a sense of personal and social responsibility as a citizen in society.

Success Strategies for Online Learning


This course will contribute to the achievement of the following Essential
Employability Skills:
1. Self-assess, interpret readiness, and develop a plan for online
class participation and learning
2. Demonstrate proficiency using the Learning Management System (LMS)
3. Evaluate and understand active reading strategies and how web tools can
improve reading in an online environment
4. Use a variety of techniques and digital tools to facilitate writing,
note-taking, and test-taking in class and online
5. Access the internet for research and evaluate web resources effectively
6. Demonstrate proficiency using various sources and tools for producing
videos, and storing and viewing files in the online environment
7. Design and produce a personal e-portfolio

Introduction to Sociology
This course will contribute to the achievement of the following Essential
Employability Skills:

1. Apply the "Sociological Imagination" to describe how people and human


behaviour are shaped by social variables throughout the life span.
2. Investigate sociological theories as they pertain to diverse social issues to
challenge their own assumptions by analyzing and evaluating relevant
information from a variety of sources.
3. Articulate basic concepts, theories, and major social variables that impact
behaviour and apply them to features of Canadian society at macro and
micro levels.
4. Discuss sociological theories, concepts, and ideas about family,
socialization, social stratification, ethnicity, deviance and culture in groups
to express empirically as well as theoretically-based opinions in a manner
that shows respect for diverse opinions, values, belief systems, and
contributions of others.
5. Develop an awareness of how society operates using relevant
communicative strategies to derive meanings that are applicable
to active citizenship

Introduction to Psychology Behavioural Science


This course will contribute to the achievement of the following Essential
Employability Skills:
1. Identify key components of psychological evidence related to biological,
behavioural, and mental processes regarding studied human behaviour
and mental processes from the nature vs nurture perspectives.
2. Describe human development using the key theories and concepts
3. Interpret cognitive and emotional intelligence from personal viewpoint.
4. Compare theories and assessment methods of personality from various
psychological perspectives.
5. Identify the major psychological disorders and connect them to
appropriate psychological therapies and effective methods of
intervention

Academic Writing for Success

This course will contribute to the achievement of the following Essential


Employability Skills:
1. Navigate course tools and resources.
2. Identify strategies for online/hybrid learning.
3. Write effective, grammatically correct sentences.
4. Plan, develop, write, and edit paragraphs.
5. Plan, develop, write, and edit clear, concise, well-organized essays.
6. Research information using electronic and paper-based sources.
7. Document information using MLA/APA method.
8. Identify verbal and non-verbal elements of effective oral communication.
9. Deliver a short presentation incorporating effective oral presentation skills
for an audience.
10.Recognize ethical and effective communication principles and related
dispositions, and how they influence daily interactions with others.
11.

Identify intrapersonal and interpersonal strengths and

weaknesses and create personal development plans through the


examination of values, beliefs and behaviour in one-on-one and
group interactions.
