SEMINAR 2

Stage 1
Code of Ethics

I, Carlos Flores, commit to practice the profession ethically and with morals and values that will
not only look for my benefit but it will be of equality to myself and the patient. My values and
principles will represent those of a professional with respect and integrity in all areas of my life
and practice, not only with patients but with everyone around me and the environment.
These ethics will define who I am and what I do, I will work my best in order to help everyone
around me without taking any parts or sides.
This goes to my patients, as well as colleagues and other practitioners whom I will work with,
and most importantly, with every individual I come in contact with to make them a better
individual. I will try to pass along this message not by saying, but by doing, trying to make a
positive change in the people I get in contact with.

This is the Code of Ethics I made in week 2. It states the integrity I decided to apply during my
internship at school and in the future in my career. During internship I not only looked for the
best in my patients but also in my classmates where I tried to help whenever I could. I said I
wouldnt take ant sides and work my best in order to help everyone and make the environment a
good learning opportunity, where Im not only learning from the instructor, but from my patients
and classmates. Interacting with them, collaborating, and working together to become better
Student Massage Therapists. By making the person next to me a better individual all around, will
make the area a better working environment.

Stage 2
Analysis

In my Code of Ethics I described the steps and contributions I wanted to make in order to
succeed as an SMT and make my classmates succeed as well along with me. As I mentioned,
making my classmates learn and succeed will also benefit me and make me become a better
student and learner.
I followed the commitments I said I would make, I told myself to become a better integral
individual without taking any sides to benefit anyone. I said that integrity will be a big part of my
learning experience and I applied that as much as possible. Treating everyone (patients,
instructor, and classmates) with respect were applied. I actively listened to my patients in order
to put myself in their shoes (empathy) and create the best treatment plan for them according to
my knowledge. Applied the knowledge I have to truly help them overcome their impairment.
Also, thanks to my instructor that made this learning experience more effective, and positive. I
learned from her, I listened to her advice, and when not treating patients I was assigned tasks that
I took seriously in order to learn. And I did learn from those small assignments, either
individually or collaborating with other classmates.
Using the resources of the clinic (textbooks, equipment, and tools) made it a better learning
experience, having those extra resources made things easier to learn. Talking with others about a
specific case made me think outside the box and I find I learn a lot when working with other in a

similar case. Overall, in the clinic it was a positive learning experience where we all tried to help
each other become better SMTs.
Having my mentor observe me as I treated also helped me. As I was given some feedback about
how to improve and do better next time. I was told to relax and take my time since the visits by
my mentor were early into the semester. I put that advice into practice and found that it helped
me a lot with my assessments. The mentorship part helped me a lot as I was able to get feedback
from a student who had been through all of this already. He suggested to assess myself, and write
about my strength and weaknesses and that would help me out become a better SMT. I applied
that self-assessment principle to evaluate myself and become better and more efficient at my
internship skills.
I also kept my patients confidentiality at all times. I know Im not supposed to share any of their
information with anybody so I maintained it that way.
In order to maintain integrity I had to apply my values and principles in all the areas, rather than
only in a few.
Overall I maintain my integrity as much as possible during my internship and applied as much of
my knowledge as I could in order to help my patients, my classmates and learn as much as
possible from my instructors.

Stage 3
Future Contribution

SEMINAR 2

After an amazing experience during my first on campus internship, and learning more about the
hands-on experience in the clinic, I would like to apply the knowledge and experience gained in
my second on campus internship.
I would like to contribute to the learning experience of my classmates. I believe that if you help
the people around you, you will receive the same treat from them, and enhance a better learning
experience for everyone. My contribution is not only to benefit my patients, but to benefit the
classmates I am learning with. The impact I want to make is by helping others.
I want to make this contribution because by helping my classmates will contribute indirectly
towards my performance. It will give me a positive feeling, and sense of completion. Helping
others gives a person a positive feeling, especially when you see that other people complete their
task. In addition, a positive environment is a much better learning environment with positive
people wanting to help each other. You send across the message of giving, and most people will
do it back. That brings a positive learning experience for you as well that should reflect on your
performance and marks.

By asking others about their performance, asking if they need help or assistance and by being
there for them in case they need help is a way to know I will be making the contribution. Not
everyone might accept they need the help or assistance, but it is a great way to build relationships
when you accept the help from other people. But for those who accept the assistance, will receive
it.

SEMINAR 2

For those who don't accept it, the benefits of a great learning experience will be available for
them as well because they will see the positive outcomes from collaborating with other
classmates and helping each other, and hopefully it will impact them.
In order for me to make this contribution to my section I need to know all areas of the internship
section (assessment, confidentiality, treatment, referrals, etc.) to be able to help others in
sections/areas they need assistance in. As well as earn my classmates trust, so they can trust me
with any problems they may face.
Some people don't like to share their problems or flaws with others, because they think others
may criticize them. So for this not to happen i need to have my classmates' trust. They should
know I will not share any information they share, I will not judge, I will only try to help them
become better SMTs.
I think when my classmates know I am there to help them when they need it, and the more I try
to make them better SMTs, the easier it will get to get them to trust me.
Overall, that is my contribution goal for the next internship. Make other SMTs better so I can
become better by helping them and learning from them.

Reflection
With this seminar I learned about the importance of contribution to others. Code of Ethics is
what keeps us aligned as professionals.
During seminar 2 I included my own code of ethics and how I will reflect as a future
professional, how I will work and perform. Contributing to other is also a big part of my

SEMINAR 2

professionalism, by others I mean collaborate with other professionals, help patients and help
people above me. This assignment also made realize my values and principles and how I will
apply them when I get on the work field.
Having principles and values are extremely important, and knowing how to apply them.
Applying them into our daily lives and relationships should reflect who we are, this is why it is
so important to have them clearly stabled.
That is why I found this seminar important, because you are not only making a contribution to
yourself but to others as well.
