Student Profile:
Students have completed the first four clusters in the year already. For this final
cluster students will have had minor exposure to urban places. Yesterdays class
students will have learned the differences between urban, rural and remote locations.

Learning Experiences: 5.1/5.2 Rural, Urban, and Remote Places

Lesson Focus
Learning Goal: Students will see the solutions they provided are already being
implemented in various cities around the world.

Specific Learning Outcomes:


At the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
1) Identify reasons for the emergency of particular cities as centers of power and
wealth
2) Be Willing to consider the merits of living in rural, urban and remote places
3) Use Canadian examples to describe the major functions of urban places
4) Identify factors that influence the location of urban centers

Rationale:
After we discuss the possible solutions to the issues facing urban cities last class. I
imagine one of the hot topic subjects would have been transportation and public
transport as many students commute to school via bus. In this class we will look at
some of the mega cities in the world and their transportation systems. We will
discuss why they are located where they are and why they need such intricate
systems.

Computer and projector.

Lesson Outline
Guiding Questions:
1) From last class we looked at some of the solutions that Canadian cities are
implementing for transportation issues facing students and residents living in
urban locations.
2) Why do you think many of those are not being implemented here in
Winnipeg?
3) Why are the more intricate systems located in Mega cities?
4) What are Mega cities?
5) Why are they located where they are.

- No formal activity in class. Class will be mostly lecture and some in class
discussion based on the topic at hand.

Class discussion on some of the solutions we found and where we found

For this specific lesson there are no in class assignments. At the end of the
week there will be a small for learning quiz to see if the students are learning
the content and to ensure they are taking notes and being engaged during
the class.
