CASE STUDY#9: Jennie Davenport and Pedro Lopez

Converting a Powerful Workshop to an Online Format
Project Manager: Laura Pinkston |EDUC 6145

Purpose
Problem: Gay and Bi-Sexual men had been shown to be at the highest risk
rate for HIV/AIDS. The danger increased with the use of anonymous meetings
using online dating sites.

Opportunity Addressed:
1. Educate those who are unaware of health risks associated with unsafe
sex practices.
2. Inform individuals, who may participate in acts while in altered states of
judgement or other compromising situations, about the long term effects
of unsafe sex.
3. Decrease sexual contact with others via the internet.

Project Justification:
Inform more men of HIV/AIDS prevention around the world, than the
initial face-to-face workshop, previously given by Clark Essex in cities across
the U.S monthly. Create an easily accessible platform for men everywhere to
anonymously interact and discuss the prevention of HIV/AIDS globally.

Proposed Approach
The National Health Foundation (NHF) formally authorizes Professor Clark
Essex's face-to-face workshop "Man-to-Man" (M2M) HIV/AIDS prevention
workshop, to be designed and developed into a highly interactive multimedia
format, for the Gay and Bisexual online global community. A project plan will be
created and developed by Clark Essex, the originator of the workshop and a
renowned sexual expert at Midwestern State University, Jennie Davenport,
project manager with eduLearning Systems (eLS), and professor Pedro Lopez , a
professor of Learning Sciences at Midwestern State University. The project plan
will include the 10 components of the sexual health model, develop 3 levels of
prototype (9 month duration), product development (6 months), and evaluate

using randomized controlled study to compare workshop effectiveness. The

project will also include the schedule, cost estimates, budget cost,
communications, quality, and stakeholder management as well as project
control. All resources will be assigned by the Project Sponsor, National Health
Foundation.

Expected Outcomes
To inform gay and bisexual men, particularly those who date online,
about the dangers of unsafe sexual behavior. This in turn will improve the
sexual health for gay and bisexual men. In the workshop model, "participants in
the experimental group showed a decrease in risky behavior by 32% after six
months and 27% decrease a year later, while the control group decreased by
12% then after six months and 8% a year later" (Ertmer et al, 2014). The online
version in hoped to have a higher rate of decrease in risky behaviors.

Project Objectives
The objective of the IM2M project is to improve the awareness of
prevention. The project will implement all of the design and development
activities to adapt the workshop model into an online learning environment.
The project will deliver content to improve the communication of unsafe sexual
behavior to gay and bi-sexual men. The project will also adhere to project goals
submitted by the NHF:
1. Develop an HIV/AIDS prevention workshop for gay and bisexual men for
delivery over the internet.
2. Use 10 components of the sexual health model as the basis for the
Internet-delivered workshop.
3. Incorporate contemporary principles of e-learning and distance education
into the online workshop.

Success Criteria
There are some criteria that were requested by NHF that we have also
implemented into the project. A timeline of 2 years has been designated
to complete the transformation of the M2M (face-to-face) workshop into
the IM2M (online version). The transformation of the workshop will be

based on the implementation of the guidelines prescribed by the NHF.

Constraints
There are some constrains for the content to be delivered in the IM2M
model that weren't relevant for the face-to-face model delivered by Prof.Essex.
The face-to-face workshop model contained "hot cognitions" such as
sensual/erotic media in some parts of the lectures. The importance of the
material has been stated by Prof. Essex "the use of sexually explicit media in
such settings gradually reduced participants' discomfort and shame while
simultaneously facilitating positive behavior change" (Ertmer, 2014). When
adding the content to an online format there runs the risk of some legal and
ethical implications if a participant were to commit a sex crime, due to arousal
from the "hot cognitions".
There is also the challenge when creating the IM2M module it will face
evaluation to compare workshop effectiveness to the online module format as
prescribed by the NHL. An evaluation of the effectiveness of the online version
will be done by 60 volunteers, 6 months and 9 months later to meet the 9
month evaluation timeline. so it will be a challenge to have volunteers to
submit responses to a discussion forum. Also the face-to-face workshop was
evaluated in 6 month and 1 year increments, while the online version will be
evaluated in 6 and 9 month increments, so the data may be somewhat skewed.
