BIO100: Introduction to Biology

Course Overview: This course provides the skills and content necessary for
a student to formulate and address questions in the biological sciences. It is
intended primarily for students continuing in biology, but is suitable for nonmajors. Students enrolled in this course must participate in the laboratory,
and there is a laboratory fee. No prerequisites.
Course goals/Learning outcomes:
Develop a general understanding of the content of the different fields
of biological investigation
Identify the common themes within and across divisions of biology (for
ex, unity and diversity)
Be able to locate, critically analyze, interpret and apply information a
variety of sources, from popular news to primary research articles
Develop critical observational skills
Apply common laboratory tools and techniques
Formulate testable scientific questions, and design experiments to
investigate those questions
Collect, analyze and interpret data
Present results of experiments logically and with clarity in both written
and oral forms.
