Description of Activities and Setting

Good morning class. First, I want everyone in the class to look up at my water
bottle. What can you tell me about the water in this bottle and how it moves
inside the bottle? Does the water move easily? We have talked about the
weather and how the temperature effects precipitation (CFU who remembers
what that means?) that comes from the sky. Based on what we know about
rain and snow, how does snow change from being frozen to being liquid?
I am going to pass out a cup of water that I got from the sink and put it on
each table. I am also going to pass out a cup of water that has been in the
freezer all night. Both cups have the same amount of liquid in the cup. I want
you all to get out your journals and write down how each of the cups are
different. You can pick up the cups and notice the difference in the weight and
the temperature.
Can you all tell me some of the differences that you notice? (The class will
share that they saw how the one that was frozen was heavier and that it does
not move. They will also share that the liquid can move in the container.)
When you freeze a cup of water, it changes from a liquid to a solid. This is a
change in the properties. A property is a characteristic of a liquid. What is
another word that we know we can use when talking about water? (liquid) A
solid cannot change shapes, but a liquid that is a bottle can change and fit to
the container that you put it in (I will take a tall skinny glass, and a short glass
and pour the liquid from the tall and skinny container to the short container.)
You see how even when I moved the water from one cup to the other, the
liquid took the shape of the container I put it in? Can someone get up and
show me an example of something in our classroom that is a solid? (Table)
What are some real life examples of liquids?
What are some real life examples of solids?

4. Elaborate

Students will do a worksheet where they write the answer from the word bank
in the corresponding column (either solid or liquid)

Time
5 minutes

8-10
minutes

15
minutes

Words in the word bank: Honey, tree, milkshake, tea, car, pencil, computer,
water, phone
Students will write two sentences about the differences between solids and
liquids when they are heated.

5. Evaluate
Assessment Methods of
all objectives/skills
6. Assessment Results of
all objectives/skills

The assignment will be completed independently at their seats.

The students will receive up to 8 points for each word put in the correct
column. They will receive an additional 2 points for writing two detailed
sentences about solids and liquids. The assignment will be graded out of 10
points.

Targeted Students Modifications/Accommodations

PID during the explore I will go to the ELL student
and help them come up with a list a differences and
explain some vocabulary before I introduce to the
whole class as well. (Solid, Liquid) PID - I will also
help my ELL student during the assessment to make
sure they know what the items listed are.
