What is the teacher doing?

What are the students doing?

Instruct students to think about

the pictures shown but not to talk
about it for thirty seconds. Have
them write down any thoughts or
ideas they may have. Have the
class discuss the photos. Why do
you think they made the letters
look they way they do? Photos
were found on Google. Go
through Power point of graffiti.
Ask questions like Why didnt
they use words here? How would
you classify street art?
Announce that we will be doing
our own type of graffiti art.

Students are thinking critically

about the street art presented
paying attention to ideas that
come in their mind. Discuss their
thoughts and feelings with the
class.

Explain to students that they will

be creating graffiti art on paper
using their name. Present to
them the photo of a graffiti
name. Explain to students that
they will need to think critically
about their background. Show
them examples of backgrounds,
symbols. They are expected to
have their name and 2 symbols.
Explain that one piece of paper is
used for the background and the
other is for their name and
symbols.
Have students gather the
materials they will need.

Students look at the examples

set by the teacher. Write down
any ideas they may have. Pause
to listen to the expectations.

Students gather colouring pencils

and paper they may need.

Conclusio
n

Allow students time to work on

their art project. Circulate the
room observing the students on
how they are doing and if they
need any clarification.

Have a one on one conference

with students as they finish their
projects to discuss how they feel
they did according to the set
expectations. Allow them to state
how well they did first then have
them reason as to why they feel
they did that well.

Students work on their art

projects focusing on the
expectations set by the class and
the teacher. Students may work
in groups or alone but each
student will produce a personal
project. Students use on piece of
paper to make the background.
The other paper is for their name
and symbols, which are then
glued on top of their background.
Students conference with
teacher and state how they feel
they did on the art project.
Students must give reasons
according to the expectations for
why they feel they did that well.

Assessment: Students will present a finished product of their art. They will have
their name in the art, two symbols that represent them, and a background. Students
will be assessed on their use of colours, spacing, and patterns.
Accommodations/Modifications: Talk about the legality of street art and graffiti or
its use in political statements. Talk about how it is an expression of oneself and
their beliefs and in some places it is accepted and encouraged. Have larger paper
for the background.
Extension and extra time activity: If students finish early and other students are still
working on their project they may doodle or read. If everyone is done have a whole
class discussion about the project. Can you propos a different way to express who
you are?
Reflection on how the lesson went.
