Activity

Instructional strategies/learning tasks/sequence of activities (include what you and

the students will be doing that supports diverse student needs)
Start with the picture of Abraham Lincoln at Gettysburg
Ask the students:
Who is this man
Where do you think he is
Why is he important?
He is giving the Gettysburg address. Can anyone tell me why this battle is
important? (students should know the answer from a previous lesson). We are going
to look more extensively at this battle.
Show students the picture of the battlefield.
I am going to show you another picture. But this one is a little graphic, so if you feel
uncomfortable you can step out of the room.
What are do you see?
Is this a little disturbing to see?
How many people died in this battle?
After such a long and bloody war Lincoln made a very famous speech called the
Gettysburg Address. We are going to read and listen to his speech. It isnt very long.
We are going to try and translate it in to terms so we can understand it better.
Have students read the address themselves. Tell them to write notes as they read.
Then come together and read it, stopping after phrases or sentences to translate it.
When you are oden use the video of someone impersonating Lincolns voice so they
can hear it out loud.
After translating:

Why was the speech important? Why is it such a famous speech?

Do you think Lincoln would have made this kind of speech at the beginning
of the war?

Closure
Summary of lesson
After learning about the battle, seeing the photo from before, can we justify war? Would Lincoln
justify it based off the speech you just read?
