OberlinCollegeandConservatoryisanunethicalinstitution.Fromcapitalizingonmassivelabor
exploitationacrosscampus,totheConservatoryofMusictreatingBlackandotherstudentsof
coloraslessthanthroughitseverydayrunning,OberlinCollegeunapologeticallyactsas
unethicalinstitution,antitheticaltoitshistoricalvision.Inthe1830s,thisschoolclaimeda
legacyofsupportingitsBlackstudents.However,thatlegacyhasamountedtonothingmorethan
apublicrelationscampaigninitiatedtobenefittheimageoftheinstitutionandnottheAfricana
peopleitwassetoutfor.AlongthesamelinesstatedbyUNCChapelHillstudentsintheir2015
documentACollectiveResponsetoAntiBlackness,youincludeBlackandotherstudentsof
colorintheinstitutionandmarkthemwiththewordsequity,inclusionanddiversity,whenin
factthisinstitutionfunctionsonthepremisesofimperialism,whitesupremacy,capitalism,
ableism,andacissexistheteropatriarchy.OberlinCollegeandConservatoryusesthelimited
numberofBlackandBrownstudentstocolorinitsbrochures,butthenerasesusfromstudent
lifeonthiscampus.Youprofitoffofouraccomplishmentsandinvisiblelabor,yetYouexpectus
toproducepersonalsolutionstoinstitutionalincompetencies.WeasaCollegedefinedhigh
risk,lowincome,disadvantagedcommunityshouldnothavetocarrytheburdenof
deconstructingthewhitesupremacist,patriarchal,capitalistsystemthatwetooknopartin
creating,yetissodeeplyembeddedinthesoiluponwhichthisinstitutionwasbuilt.

Inadmissionsmaterial,OberlinproudlybroadcaststhestatementThinkonepersoncanchange
theworld?Sodowe.Withthisspuriousrhetoricinmind,thetimefordirectandimmediate
actionreforminghighereducationislongoverdue.Wewillnotbesilencedwewillnotbe
attendinganymoreforums,speakouts,teachins,convocations,workinggroups,committees,

Manyofthesedemandshavebeenissuedbeforeandsubsequentlyignoredbyadministration,
facultyandstudents.Thiswasneveracceptable,andwillnolongerbetolerated.

Asyouwillseethesearenotpoliterequests,butconcreteandunmalleabledemands.Failureto
meetthemwillresultinafullandforcefulresponsefromthecommunityyoufailtosupport.

ADMISSIONS,RECRUITMENTANDRETENTION

1. WeDEMANDa4%annualincreaseinBlackstudentenrollmentfromEACHofthe
Americas,theCaribbeanandcontinentofAfricastartingin2016toaccumulatetoa40%
increaseby2022.ThisincreasemustoccurintheCollege.Additionally,thisdeadline
shouldNOTbetakenasareversalpointbacktothepreviouspolicy,andthestandardsof
increasedenrollmentshouldbeheldasaminimum.

2. WeDEMANDaconcertedefforttoincreasethepercentageofBlackstudentsand
specificallyBlackfemaleidentifyinginstrumentalistsintheJazzdepartment.Wewould
liketoreiteratethedemandfora4%annualincreaseintheenrollmentofBlackstudents
intheJazzDepartmentstartingin2016toaccumulate
to40%increasebytheyear2022.

regardingadmissionsandretention,beyondthebombardmentofOberlinCollegeemails

1. WeDEMAND
a
structuralchangeininstitutionalgraduationrequirements:

a. IntrototheBlackExperienceorasimilarcoursemustbeinstitutedasa
mandatoryrequirementforallstudentsbeforegraduation.
b. DepartmentalrequirementsforstudentstotakeWestern/Classicalcentered
coursesmustbeeliminated,ifNOTthenwedemandallstudentsMUSTalsotake
anequivalentcourseintheAfricanDiaspora.
Forexample,intheTheatreDepartmentitisarequirementtotake
WesternTheatreHistoryPartsI&IIstudentsshouldalsoberequiredto
takeacoursesuchasBlackArtsWorkshopandorAfricanAmerican
Drama.
Forexample,intheDanceDepartmentstudentsarerequiredtotakeBallet
&ContemporaryI&II,thereforestudentsshouldberequiredtotakeWest
AfricanI&II.
Forexample,intheConservatorymajorsarerequiredtotakeacoursein
MusicHistorywhosecontentisheavilywesternized,butweDEMAND
thatitbemandatoryforallConservatorystudentstotake
AfricanAmericanMusicHistory.
Forexample,intheHistorydepartmentWesternandUSHistoryaremajor
requirementswhichplacesthehistoryoftheseregionsinahigheresteem
thanotherregionsoftheworld.Therefore,weDEMANDthatstudentsbe
requiredtotakeAfricanCivilizationsuptothe1800s.
InU.S.Historyclasses,Blacknessisonlydiscussedintermsofslavery
andCivilRights.Thisisareductionist,singleviewoftheexperiencesand
contributionsofBlackpeopletothehistoryoftheUnitedStates.We
furtherDEMANDthatthecurriculumbechangedinordertodiscuss
blacknessinmoredepth.

2.WeDEMANDthatJazzCurriculumintheConservatorybereflectiveofthestudentsmusical
focus.StudentsSHOULDNOTbeforcedtotakeheavilybasedclassicalcoursesthathave
minimalrelevancetotheirJazzinterests.ClassicalstudentsarenotforcedtotakeJazzcourses,
andseeingashowmostJazzstudentsareoftheAfricanacommunity,theyshouldnotbeforced
totakecoursesrootedinwhiteness.

2. WeDEMANDawrittenformthatassuresusoftheinstitutionscommitmenttoincrease
thenumberofblackpsychologistswithintheCounselingCenter.Furthermore,we
DEMANDthatBlackstudentsbeabletositinontheinterviewsoftheseHIGHLY
QUALIFIEDcandidatesinordertoensurethattheseprofessionalscatertotheneedsof
theBlackstudents.
a. WealsoDEMANDthehiringofBlackhealers/nonwesternhealthpractitioners
becausenoteveryonefindscomfortandhealingsolelyfromapsychologist.

minimum.Historically,Blackbodieshaveexperiencedinstitutionallyacquireddebt
throughhigherinterestratesfrominsurancecompanies,mortgagecompanies,auto
finance,healthcare,etc.Thereforepilingonstudentloandebtgoesagainstoneofthecore
foundingprinciplesofOberlinCollege&Conservatory,whichistopromotethe
successfulprosperityofBlackpeoplewithintheacademicsphereandbeyond.

4. WeDEMANDthatallgrantsissuedbytheschoolforfinancialassistancepurposesbe
awardedaschequespriortothetimeofneedinsteadofareimbursement.Thisincludes
andisnotlimitedtoCareerCentergrants,IgnitionFund,XartsFundetc.

5. WeDEMANDanadequateincreaseinfundingforinternshipsandcareeropportunities
forallBlackstudentsthatisawardedappropriately.Forinstance,a$3500internshipfund
foralowincomestudentwitha3monthinternshipinNewYorkCitydoesnotmakeany
sustainablesenseconsideringthehighcostofliving.WefurtherDEMANDthatwehave
directinputinthestructuringoftherubricusedtograntthesefunds.

TheimmediatedivestmentfromIsrael,whohasexploitedmanyAfrican
