My Three College Choices!

After four long years of high school, college is usually the next step. I
want to have a financially comfortable life and a well-paying job. In todays
economy, it is hard to get a good job without going to college first. The three
colleges I have in mind to attend are the University of Southern Indiana, Ivy Tech
Community College, and Purdue University.
The University of Southern Indiana was founded in September 15, 1965. The
University began as a regional campus of Indiana State University, which is located
in Evansville, Indiana. They opened on September 15, 1965. In 1967, Southern
Indiana Higher Education, Inc., (SIHE) raised almost one million dollars to form onethousand and four-hundred acres for the Mid-America University Center.
Groundbreaking was held June 22, 1968. Ever since September 1969, the University
has occupied 330 acres, which were donated by SIHE. On April 16, 1985,
legislation was signed which made USI a separate state university. All the legal
matters were effective July 1, 1985. On June 30, 2008, SIHE transferred ownership

of over nine-hundred acres of land. These acres of land still stand today as so does
the University of Southern Indiana (USI History, Facts, Information).

The University enrolls over 10,000 dual credit, undergraduate and graduate
students in eighty different majors. USI, is considered a higher education college.
USI offers various programs. This includes, College of Liberal Arts, Romaine College
of Business, College of Nursing and Health Professions, and the Pott College of
Science, Engineering, and Education. The University offers study-abroad
opportunities in more than sixty countries, and is host to international students from
all around the world ("About the University of Southern Indiana | USI Information).
Ivy Tech Community College is more convenient for me. This college is close to
where I live. Ivy Tech Community College is the state's largest public college for the
Evansville community. Ivy Tech is also the nation's largest singly accredited
statewide community college system. Ivy Tech has campuses spread around the
state of Indiana. It serves as the state's engineering development. Ivy Tech is a
more affordable college. It has plenty degree programs and training that are aligned
with the needs of its community along with courses and programs that transfer to
other colleges and universities in Indiana. It is accredited by the Higher Learning
Commission and a member of the North Central Association ("Ivy Tech." Ivy Tech
Community College).

The Human Services program at Ivy Tech is geared toward students who
are interested in counseling and helping professions. People who attend here will
spend the majority of their time interacting and doing problem-based activities,
case studies and experiences that will prepare them to counsel and provide
feedback as future social workers and counselors. After the first class, someone
who is attending this college will participate in job shadowing and volunteer in the
community. All degrees include two internships with direct hands-on learning
opportunities and experiences. Case workers have sixty credit hours which will level
out into four semesters ("Human Resources." Ivy Tech Community College).

There is a lot of interesting history of the University of Purdue. In 1862,

President Abraham Lincoln signed the Morrill Land Grant Act, which gave public
lands over to any state that agreed to use the land sale proceeds to maintain a
college teaching agriculture and the "mechanic arts." In 1865, The Indiana General
Assembly voted to participate in the plan and takes steps to establish such an
institution. In 1869, The Indiana General Assembly choose the Lafayette area for the
new institution and accepted a $150,000 gift from John Purdue, as well as $50,000
from Tippecanoe County and 100 acres from the local residents back then. The
legislature named the new school Purdue University. In 1879, the first telephone is
installed on campus. And all the way up to 2014, Purdue's international student

enrollment is tops among U.S. public universities ("Purdue University." Purdue

History).
Purdue University is a little pricey, but a very good school as well. It cost
$23,032 estimated plus an extra $1,436 for the management program. Purdue has
more than two-hundred majors within ten colleges and schools. This university also
offers Exploratory Studies for students that are unsure about what study they want
to major in. To get into Purdue, you must have taken your SAT and ACT. Then the
scores must be sent to the college. Purdue has 1,874 different classes to choose
from (Indiana's Land Grant University).
I chose these three colleges because two are in my hometown and one is
farther away, which means change. The University of Sothern Indiana is good
choice, and high in education. Ivy Tech Community College is close to home,
cheaper, and Ive already been accepted there. Purdue is a little farther away, which
could be a good change of environment for me.
