Reflective Journal Entry #6
As I read the descriptions of each type of teacher mentioned in this chapter, I noticed that
I posses some of the characteristics of each type mentioned. I recognize that I do not yet have the
experience to make a claim that I am a particular type of teacher; I am still shaping into a teacher
and learning what styles are best for me and the students whom I have been given the
opportunity to teach.
In the little experience that I have teaching, I have developed into the kind of teacher that
stresses comprehension. In efforts to ensure that students understand my directions for an activity,
I will verbally explain them as well as demonstrate the activity by asking for volunteers to
participate in my demonstrations. I noticed that since I have adopted this technique into my
lessons this semester, students know exactly what is expected from them, and do not waste time
asking their peers for clarifications. Also, I have learned to be patient in waiting for student
participation during response time since I am in a class where students are extremely slow to
volunteer their participation, if at all. Because these students lack enthusiasm or interest in
participation, I am now conscious of providing praise for any student who participates. I believe
it is important to encourage and praise student participation so that they feel comfortable to
engage in classroom activity.
As mentioned previously, I recognize that I do not have a single teaching style. Rather, I
am still developing my style, and am finding out what are my own tendencies and patterns when
teaching. I am developing into a teacher that not only wants the students to have fun while
learning, but I value respect for learning and the content standards. I set up my classroom
environment so that my students have mutual respect for each other and for me as their instructor.
I am neither strict and rigid, nor am I in the classroom to just have fun with students. Rather, I
establish a balance between the two styles to create an ideal learning environment where students
have fun while learning from each other.Even though I have a few characteristics that might be
considered those of a good teacher, I am aware of how much more growth lays ahead of me so
that I can be an effective teacher for my students.
