ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study is to assess the profile of tear mucin layer and impression cytology in eyes with and without pterygium.
A cross sectional study was conducted in Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo Hospital and BKMM Makassar. Patients with unilateral primary
pterygium who visited both centers during the period from 1 January to 31 August 2009 were included. There were 34 subjects (68
eyes) with unilateral primary pterygium fulfilled the criteria. Tear mucin layers were examined by Break Up Time (BUT) test, Tear
Ferning Test (TFT) and impression cytology test of the bulbar conjunctiva on both eyes of the subjects with pterygium as well as fellow
eye (without pterygium). The result of this study showed that average BUT value in eyes with pterygium was 8.44 seconds and in eyes
without pterygium was 13.84 seconds. TFT degree in eyes with pterygium was grade 3 and 4 while eyes without pterygium was grade
1 and 2. Impression cytology in eyes with pterygium was grade 23, while eyes without pterygium was grade 01. These differences
were statistically significant (p < 0.05). No significant correlation was found between patients condition (age, sex and occupation) and
tear mucin layer, impression cytology. Most of cases with medial pterygium, third stage and intermediate (T2)/fleshy (T3) pterygium
type had abnormalities in mucin and impression cytology. It is concluded that there are significant abnormalities of tear mucin layer
and impression cytology in eyes with pterygium.
Key words: tear mucin layer, BUT, TFT, impression cytology, unilateral primary pterygium
