PART 3: LESSON FOCUS (15-20 mins):
Activity
Skill: Dribbling
Dribbling is used to advance the ball, break for
a basket, or maneuver out of a difficult situation.
The dribblers knees and trunk should be slightly
flexed, with hands and eyes forward. The
fingertips propel the ball with the hand cupped
and relaxed. There is little arm motion. Younger
children tend to slap at the ball rather than push it.
The dribbling hand should be alternated, and
practice in changing hands is essential.

Teaching Hints
Instructional cues for dribbling include the
following:
1. Push the ball to the floor. Dont slap it.
2. Push the ball forward when moving.
3. Eyes forward and head up.
Practice the skills in an individual manner as
much as possible. The best alternative is a ball for
every student to shoot and dribble. Reduce taking
turns as much as possible when practicing skills.

Drill: Random Dribbling

Each child has a ball. Dribbling is done in place,
varied by sign left and right hands. Develop a
sequence of body positions (i.e., standing,
kneeling, lying on the side, on two feet and one
2

hand). Encourage players to develop a sequence

by dribbling a certain number of times in each
selected position. Dribble with each hand.
PART 4: GAME ACTIVITY (5 mins):
Activity
Birdie in the Cage
Skills: Passing, catching, intercepting

Teaching Hints
Be sure that no one is left out of the activity for
long periods of time. Keep everyone active as
much as possible.

Players are placed in circle formation with two or

more children in the center of the circle. The
object of the game is for the center players to try
to touch the ball while circle players are passing
it. After a brief time (15-20 seconds), choose new
players to enter the circle. If scoring is desired,
center players can count the number of touches
they made. The ball should move rapidly. Passing
to a neighboring player is not allowed. Play can
be limited to a specific type of pass (bounce, twohand, push).
