Dear Mr. Martinez,
My name is Arianna Baria. I am a graduate of Paramus High School. For the time that I
was in high school, I was required to take classes that I did not want to take. For example,
biology, chemistry, and physics, which were all classes that needed to be taken in order to
graduate. I hated those classes because I had horrible science teachers in middle school.
Whatever they would teach, I would not understand due to their lack of explaining
difficult topics and lack of organization when giving assignments.
I remember in fifth grade, I was in a group of four students to do a light experiment and
we had a packet to hand in when we were finished. A week later, my teacher had every
other group graded except ours because she lost it. We ended up being exempt from the
assignment. Although my average was not terrible, that lab could have brought up my
grade by five to ten points.
In addition to my fifth grade science teacher, my eleventh grade chemistry teacher also
gave me a bad-learning experience. She had such great organization skills, but she never
knew how to put them into use. On the first day of that class, she had a syllabus with all
the chapters we were going to study for each month. However, being the inconsiderate
teacher that she was, she would cram in more information the day before a test, even after
we received the study guide. It was imperative that a teacher stuck to their syllabus
because the students would then get thrown off because it was not what they originally
expected.
I have gone through a variety of horrible science teachers, but those two have to be the
most prominent in my mind. Not all the teachers I had in the science field were terrible,
and that was why I continued to try my best. The best teacher I had was in Biology and
that was why I decided to major in it in college. The teacher was just everything I
expected him to be. He was organized and very understanding of students. He would
lecture different information each day for approximately forty-five minutes and after he
would have a game where he would throw the ball to a random person and the person
would throw it around to someone new and talk about what he or she learned in the last
fifteen minutes of class. Personally, repeating information helped me retain it because I
was an auditory learner.
My dentists were Dr. Blanche and Dr. Carabuena. I was only six years old when I first got

scheduled for a cleaning appointment. My first dentist frightened me, even though she
was my grandma, so I thought to myself, this is just going to be worst. Everyone I
knew was always afraid of the dentist and I would constantly hear bad experiences from
my cousins. The only knowledge I had back then was that he or she was going to put
different tools in my mouth to clean my teeth. I used to watch this television show called
Calliou, and there was this episode where he had to go to the dentist to get his teeth
cleaned. Of course it did not go well and just my luck, I watched it a week prior to going
to get my own teeth cleaned.
I then went to get my teeth cleaned and it did not hurt a single bit. I felt as if everyone
who told me his or her experiences exaggerated or that I just had a high tolerance with
pain. My dentists were so kind. They were a married couple that started their own private
practice. The female dentist was a pediatric dentist and she was the one who cleaned my
teeth and the male dentist was the one who joked around with me. As I was laid on the
chair waiting for the girl to clean my teeth, I was scared and so the male dentist eased my
nervousness by telling me a joke. I do not recall what the joke was, but it made me laugh
and I then knew that I was going to be okay. Along with that, my mom was in the room
with me, so I felt secure. The experiences that I have heard made my expectations so low
that when I actually got my teeth cleaned, it was not as bad as I thought it would be.
As of now, I have decided to study at Bergen Community College for two years to finish
off my basic requirements, and attain an associates degree in General Biology. As soon
as I receive that, I plan on transferring to Rutgers Newark to be part of the dentistry
program. Shortly after I graduate, I intend to take and pass the DATs, and intern in a
dentist office for at least two years to get some experience before I start my own private
practice. Eventually, I will get my certification and I can be on my way to being the
dentist I dream to be.
Sincerely,
Arianna Baria
