TOPIC Day 3: Dont Drop That

OBJECTIVES:

SWBAT list topics that are unacceptable or inappropriate for casual

conversation
SWBAT share about one of these inappropriate topics in depth, giving
the reasons why it is improper and their own opinion about the topic

REVIEW/PREVIEW: [ 10 minutes ]

Students write a dialogue between two

of the people in a photo projected on
the screen. The dialogue should
include all the class has learned so far:
greeting, introduction, small talk.
Teacher collects the dialogue in order
to check individual progress.
Teacher shares objectives with the class.

INTRODUCTION: [ 20 minutes ]

Teacher explains that this lesson lesson will take place over two class
periods.
Students think about all of the conversations they have had in the last
24 hours and make a list of all of the topics they talked about.
Students listen to first 3 minutes of This American Life Podcast: The Seven
Things You're Not Supposed to Talk About . 1:16 to 4:00
Teacher prompts comprehension questions:
a. What is the list?
b. Who first invented the list?
c. What are the seven things youre not supposed to talk about them?
d. What are the reasons for not talking about these topics?
e. Who should you not talk about them with?
f. Where is Sarahs mother from? How can you tell?
Students look back at the list of topics theyve talked about within the
last 24 hours and mark the topics that are on Sarahs moms list.
Teacher elicits student examples of breaking the code of topics not to
be discussed.
Class brainstorms additional topics that shouldnt be discussed in
public for reasons other than boredom: politics, war, disease, religion,
age, weight/physical appearance.

PRE-LISTENING: [ 15 minutes ]

Students are divided into 6 groups One for each topic that shouldnt
be discussed (except for one as it is not appropriate). Sleep, Health,
Dreams, Money, Diet, Route Talk. Students meet with their group and
are given a list of 10 or so vocabulary words to look up and learn as a
group before listening.

LISTENING: [ 15 minutes ]

Teacher explains that the purpose is to listen for meaning. These

students will become experts on this topic and why it should or
shouldnt be talked about in order to teach it to their classmates. As
they listen they need to take notes on the main ideas and relevant
examples.
Most likely, students will do the listening portion in a language lab
where they can be listening to the section of the podcast assigned to
them on headphones. Alternatively, students could use phones to
listen in their groups in the hall or other classrooms. Each segment is
about 5 to 6 minutes and students will have a chance to listen through
twice. The first time taking notes, the second time with a written
transcript.

POST LISTENING: [ 20 minutes ]

Students meet in their groups and discuss the following questions:

a. What are the main reasons why this topic is unacceptable for casual
conversation?
b. Are there any exceptions to this?
c. What is an example given that could possibly be an exception?
d. Does the story presented satisfy Sarahs mother as an acceptable
exception to the rule?
e. What is your opinion? Is this an off-limits topic for casual
conversation?

CONCLUSION: [ 5 minutes ]

Students take five minutes to jot down some notes from their time with
the group that they think will be important to share as the teacher in
the next class.

This lessons main focus is on listening. The material is a podcast that is a

mix between Deliberate Free Speech (during the interview portion) and Fixed
Script (when the hosts present a mostly scripted story). This is a good mix to
have because it is representative of a lot of media and television that
students will be exposed to outside of the classroom. The activity in the
lesson is more of global listening where its far less structured than the

teacher playing and pausing the audio with scripted questions. Students
know they are listening for the main ideas in order to have a discussion.
They have control of the audio and can play or stop when they feel they
need to. The podcast is also very engaging, funny, and uses a British
speaker. Splitting it up into 5-minute chunks makes it manageable for
students. Again, the lesson plan has a different format from the previous
two. This format is Pre Listening, Listening, and Post Listening.
