Introduction to The Lightning Thief

Overview

Students will look at different covers of the novel and watch the trailer
for the movie to make inferences about what the artwork tells us and
what will happen in the novel.

Objectives

Use different types of illustrations of the novel in order to gain some


insight into what the novel is about.

Materials

PPT of book covers


List of characters (doc)
The Lightning Thief- students will receive their copies during this hour

Standards

7.SL.2.1:
Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one,
in groups, and teacher-led) on grade appropriate topics, texts, and issues,
building on others ideas and expressing personal ideas clearly.
7.SL.3.1:
Analyze the main ideas and supporting details presented in diverse
media and formats (e.g., visually, quantitatively, orally) and explain how
the ideas clarify a topic, text, or issue under study.
7.ML.2.1
Interpret the various ways in which events are presented and information
is communicated by visual image-makers to influence the public.

Procedures

1) Pass out novel and post-it notes to students


2) Show students collage of book covers
3) Have students discuss what they think the novel is going to be about
based on the covers 10 mins
a. Make sure they discuss what Greek god(s) might be involved
in the novel
b. What might happen in the novel
4) Show the trailer for movie: 2 mins

5) Show students list of characters
6) Tell students that they will pick a character and follow that
characters relationship to Percy throughout the novel. Tell them that
while we read they will mark passages showing that relationship
with the post-its. The post-its will help them find evidence for the
paper that will be due once we have read the novel. 3 mins

7) Have students select characters (popsicle sticks with names on them


for the picking order)
8) Have them move the section header called Characters Name Here
out of the content library and into their own OneNote.
9) Have students change the section title to the name of their character.
10 mins (steps 7-9)
10) Begin reading chapters 1-3. Any unfinished reading up to the
beginning of chapter 4 is homework. Rest of class
Extensions

If you have strong readers you can have them volunteer to read a
paragraph or a page rather than you being the only reader.
ELL you could provide an audio book (Tippecanoe County Public
Library has a CD version that can be added to iTunes or Windows
Media Player)
For students with IEPs there is a graphic novel that may help them
understand the major plot happenings, but students will still need to
mark passages in the type-only novel (Tippecanoe County Public
Library also has a copy of this available)
