Volcanos Around the World

Volcanoes Around the World

Topic: Volcanos
Grade Level: 7th Grade Science
Missouri Grade Level Expectations:.
Strand 5.2.B.a Explain convection currents are the result of uneven heating inside the mantle
resulting in the melting of rock materials, convection of magma, eruption/flow of magma, and
movement of crustal plates.
Strand 5.2.B.c Describe how the movement of crustal plates can cause earthquakes and
volcanic eruptions that can result in mountain building and trench formation.
Objectives:
1. Students will be able to explain how water and magma composition affects whether a
volcanic eruption will be explosive or non-explosive with 90% accuracy.
2. Students will be able to identify the four types of lava and four types of pyroclastic
material based upon the appearance and characteristics of the substance with 90%
accuracy.
3. Students will research an assigned volcano and present what they have learned about
their volcano in front of the class with 80% or better.
List of Materials: Desktop computer or laptop
Diversity: There are three seventh-grade classes comprising of approximately 48 students.
Over 90% are on free/reduced lunch and come from homes that are below the federal poverty
level.
Class 1: There are 21 students with 13 girls and 8 boys. There are two students who are
in the special education program who have difficulties in reading, comprehension,
mathematics and controlling behavior. The majority of the students are visual/audio
learners; however, they all enjoy kinesthetic activities. The majority of this class
consistently performs at an A-B grade level.
Class 2: There are 12 students with 7 girls and 5 boys. All students are considered to be
average students and consistently perform at a B-C grade level. The majority of the
students are visual/audio learners; however, they all enjoy kinesthetic activities. They are
easy to engage in learning and enjoy kinesthetic activities.
Class 3: There are 14 students with 3 girls and 11 boys. There are two students who are
in the special education program who have difficulties in reading, comprehension,
mathematics and controlling behavior. The majority of this class are kinesthetic learners

but can learn through visual and audio. This class ranges in performance from A to F.
Poor performance is due to inconsistent school attendance and not fulfilling classroom
requirements.
Technology Inclusion: Students will be creating Prezi presentations about an assigned volcano
and will be researching information online and watching YouTube videos that can be included in
the presentation.
Procedures:
Anticipatory set: 10 Things You Didn't Know About Volcanoes As a class, we will
watch 10 Things You Didnt Know About Volcanoes. Throughout the video, students
will need to write down 10 things that they learned. I have found that this video gets
their attention and makes them to start asking questions about volcanoes.
Direct Instruction and Guided Practice:
1. Volcanic Eruptions & Causes of Eruptions powerpoint and notes The teacher
will be presenting general information about volcanoes through a lecture method with
students filling in notes along with discussion.
Independent Practice:
1. How Does Magma's Composition Affect a Volcano's Eruption? Virtual lab
2. Volcano Research Project (see attached rubric)
Evaluation/Assessment:
1. Students will be assessed on their volcano research project based upon the attached
rubric.
2. Students will have a summative assessment over the unit on volcanoes.
Risk Analysis: When using technology, there is always the risk that computers or tablets will
not work, students may not be able to connect to the wireless network or websites could be
down. All of these have been faced in my classroom with this lesson at times. Alternatives to
using individual technology with this lesson is doing this as an entire classroom activity with the
teacher showing the lab on the Smartboard and students taking turns to come up and complete it.
If for some reason an Internet connection is unavailable, students can do research using methods
such as encyclopedias and library research. Training will probably need to be done with students
on how to create a Prezi, because most students have never used the program.
