cantilever beam of rectangular cross-section.

steel plates are rivetted to the top and bottom of an aluminium alloy I beam for which
Ixx = 2375 cm.4 By what ratio is the stiffness of the I beam increased by the addition of
steel plates and what is the ratio of the bending stress in steel and aluminium?

(b) A solid shaft is required to transmit 330 kW at 120 r.p.m. The shear stresses in the material
should not exceed 80 MPa. Find the diameter required. If the shaft is replaced by a hollow
shaft with a diameter ratio 3 : 5, maximum shear stress remaining the same, calculate the
percentage saving in weight that could be obtained.

4. (a) (i) Explain the two reasons because of which unsymmetrical bending may take place, with
examples.

(ii) Find the shear deflection, bending deflection and total deflection for an edge loaded
cantilever of rectangular cross-section.

A steel beam of symmetrical I section 150 mm. deep has flanges 80 mm. wide and 10 mm.
thick and 6 mm. thick. Compare its flexural strength with that of a beam of rectangular
section of same weight, the depth being twice its breadth.

5. (a) At a point in a strained material, the resultant intensity of stress across a plane is 50 MPa
tensile, inclined at 45 to the normal. The normal component of intensity of stress across a
plane at right angles to it is 40 MPa. tensile. Find the principal stresses and principal planes.
Locate also the plane of maximum shear stress and the magnitude of maximum shear stress.
