CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - Yet another name added to the sweeping Cuyahoga County
Corruption probe.
The U.S. Attorney's Officeindicted Thomas Greco, Jr. on six counts of bribery and two
counts of conspiracy Tuesday morning.
Greco and his boss - John Carroll- bilked the county out of $628K. The money was
earmarked for patient care.
The Feds say Greco tookjewelry, gift cards, gourmet foods and nearly $30K in landscaping
at his home from an executive at East West Construction and then padded the bills to
Metro to pay the guy back.
19 Action News has learned Greco was cuffed and stuffed by the Feds early Tuesday
morning.
"I'm confident that as this case unfolds that the world, the court will see that Tom Greco
was a dedicated employee of Metrohealth for many many years and he never did
anything to harm their interest." said Greco's Attorney Jeffrey Kelleher.
Mark J. Moran, President & CEO, The MetroHealth System released the following
statement late Tuesday:
It was 18 months ago that we first learned that ethics violations had taken place at
MetroHealth. We took action against the employees involved and worked closely with the US
Attorney's office to see that justice was done. Today's indictment of Tom Greco reinforces that
MetroHealth was the victim of criminal misconduct.
We look forward to the wheels of justice turning and bringing this matter to a close. While the
U.S. Attorney's office is pursuing restitution for MetroHealth through these cases, we are also
pursuing all legal options available to us. Today's charges, and those filed in August 2009
against former MetroHealth employee John Carroll and Nilesh Patel of East-West Construction,
are the fruits of the U.S. Attorney's extensive investigation and our cooperation. We are
outraged by the avaricious behavior of Tom Greco and his former boss, detailed in today's
charges. Their behavior stands in stark contrast to that of our dedicated employees who,
throughout this time, were caring for our patients, many of whom were unable to pay for their
care. Carroll and Patel pleaded guilty in federal court on September 9, 2009.
As MetroHealth moves forward, we are confident that new processes and procedures will guard
against this kind of corruption. We continue to use the public resources entrusted to us to
provide the residents of Cuyahoga County with the highest quality health care. We cannot let
the alleged crimes of two former employees distract us from our mission of delivering
outstanding care to all.
Carroll pleaded guilty to all corruption charges in September.
