PBL
What is it and why do I
care?
The good news is you are already doing it!

What is PBL?
Cobbs working definition of PBL is that is
authentic, student driven investigation that
promotes collaboration, communication, problem
solving and critical thinking leading to deeper
learning.
So what does that really look like?

Here are the Design Elements for

PBL
When teachers design and
conduct a project, we suggest
they (sometimes with students)
write the central problem or
question in the form of an
open-ended, student-friendly
driving question that focuses
their task, like a thesis focuses
an essay (e.g., How can we
improve our schools recycling
system, so we can reduce
waste? or Should the U.S.
have fought the Vietnam
War?).

Helps students tie knowledge

to useful real world problems.

PBL
In PBL, inquiry is iterative (that
means it repeats); when
confronted with a challenging
problem or question, students
ask questions, find resources to
help answer them, then ask
deeper questions and the
process repeats until a
satisfactory solution or answer
is developed.

What are we trying to accomplish?

Students who are able to think critically and

make connections to core content in real life
applications by means of problem based
learning.
Students who are prepared for the
workforce.

What do we need to know about

PBL/STEM:
Jobs are changing....
Students need to connect everything back to the
standards
If the kids can't articulate it, it doesn't matter what you
have put in place (Sally Creel)
Don't forget to improve! Relearn....reteach... The final
result should be the mastery of learning not a grade.
If we are going to teach the children that failure is
how you learn we need to show them that is true in
ALL areas. Failed to make your race car go? Try to
build it another way. Failed to make the soccer
team? Spend some time improving your skills and
try out again next year. Failed a SS test? Study and
take the test again.... most importantly we need to
afford them these opportunities.

PBL and STEM IS NOT

A CLASS OR A
LESSON
IT'S A CULTURE
