STANDARD PRACTICE
SP-118
An MSS Standard Practice is intended as a basis for common practice by the manufacturer, the user, and the
general public. The existence of an MSS Standard Practice does not in itself preclude the manufacture, sale,
or use of products not conforming to the Standard Practice. Mandatory conformanceis established only by
reference in a code, specification, sales contract, or public law, as applicable.
Non-toleranced dimensions in this Standard Practice are nominal, and, unless otherwise specified, shall be
considered for reference only.
Other standards documents referred to,herein are identified by the date of issue that was applicable to this
standard at the date of issue of this standard. See Annex A. This standard shall remain silent on the
applicability of those other standards of prior or subsequent dates of issue even~thoughprovisions of

a) Class 800 valve with threaded, socketwelding, or butt-welding ends; an inside screw
with rising stem (ISRS) and threaded packing
nut or an outside screw and yoke (OS&Y)
with rising stem and bolted packing-gland
flange; and a bolted, union, welded or threaded
andseal welded bonnet joint.

2.4 For valves with welded on flange or buttwelding stub ends, the material grade, along
with the post-weld treatment conditions, shall
be indicated on the identification plate, stamped
on the body, or both.

3.2.8 The end-to-end dimensions for socketweldingend, threaded-end valves, Class 800
buttweldingend valves and flangeless valves shall
be the manufacturers standard.
3.2.2 Socket-welding-end preparation shall conform to ASME B16.11. The bottom of the socket
shall be square and flat. The minimum wall
thickness of socket welding end valves shall be
in accordance with requirements of Table 4,
ASME B16.34.

3.7.2 The stem diameter (measured at the section that passes through the packing) shall not
be less than that shown in Table 6 for Class 800
and 1500 valves. Stem sizes for Class 150, 300,
and 600 valves shall be manufacturers standard.

3.15.1 Stem nuts of OS&Y globe valves shall
be made of a material resistant to galling and
corrosion and have a minimum melting point
of 1750F. Gray cast iron is prohibited.
