Learning Objective: We will compute unit rates associated with ratios of

quantities measured in different units. (G8M4L9a)

Concept Development:

Ratio: A ratio is an ordered pair of non-negative numbers, both of which are not
zero. The ratio is denoted A:B to indicate the order of the numbers: the number A is
the first number and the number B is the second.
Examples:
There are 22 girls and 11 boys in this class. The ratio of girls to boys is 22:11.
Ian drinks 24 cans of diet soda in 8 days. The ratio of cans to days is 24:8.

Equivalent Ratio: Two ratios !: ! and !: ! are equivalent if there is a positive
number c, such that ! = !" and ! = !".
Example: In 3rd period, out of 22 students, 2 students got perfect scores on the last
test. In 5th period, out of 33 students, 3 students got perfect scores on the last test.
22:2 and 33:3 are equivalent ratios.

Rate: A ratio of two quantities.
Examples:
!!
22 girls per 11 boys in 1st period. Written as a fraction: !!.

!"

Madison can do 45 pushups in 60 seconds. Written as a fraction: !"

!

Christian can run 9 miles in 2 hours. Written as a fraction: !

Unit Rate: the value of the ratethat is the value of the fraction above where the
denominator is 1.
Examples:
!!
The unit rate of !! is 2. This means there are 2 girls per boy in this class.

!"
The unit rate of !" is 0.75. This means Madison can do 0.75 pushups per second.

!
The unit rate of ! is 4.5. This means that Christian can run 4.5 miles per hour.

Guided Practice:
Steps to Calculating Unit Rates
1. Read the question carefully and create your ratio and rate.
**Hint #1: If time is one of your variables, it usually goes in the denominator.
**Hint #2: If price is one of your variables, it usually goes in the numerator.

2. Calculate the unit rate by dividing the numerator and denominator of your rate by
the denominator (to create a rate where the denominator is 1).
3. Interpret your answer in the context of the question.

Kirk drove from Mountain View to
In a jump rope competition, Lizzy
Portland. It took him 11 hours to make jumped 300 times in 6 minutes. What is
the 660 mile trip. What is his unit rate? her unit rate?

In order to take 246 students on a field
An urn has a capacity of 55 cups of hot
trip to Yosemite, we are required to have water. There are 33 packets of hot
6 chaperones. What is the unit rate?
chocolate mix. Write a rate and a unit

rate to show how many cups of water

should be used per hot chocolate packet.

Office Depot sells mechanical pencils.

You can buy an 8-pack for $2.99 and a
box of 24 pencils for $.8.50. Which is a
better deal?

Safeway sells different size boxes of
different kinds of Cheerios. An 8.9ounce box sells for $3.99. A 12-ounce
box of frosted Cheerios sells for $5.49.
Which is a better deal? How do you
know?

A 9-ounce bag of salt and vinegar kettle

chips is $4.59. A 16-ounce bag of the
same chips at Safeway is $6.09. Which is
a better deal?

A regular bag of M&Ms has (on average)

54 candy coated chocolates, and sells for
$1.19. A king size bag contains about 75
candies and sells for $1.89. Which would
you buy in order to get the best value?

What if I know I drink 16 ounces for each meal? Rank the choices in order from
cheapest to most expensive if this is the case. Does anything change? Why or why
not?

Are there other factors that I should consider (other than price) when deciding
which packaging to purchase?

Closure:
Calculating GPA as a unit rate: Your GPA is like a unit rate. It tells you overall how
you are doing. A GPA of 3.4 means that if you got the same score in all your classes, it
would be a 3.4 Letter grades map to numbers as follows:

A=4
B=3
C=2
D=1
F=0

Isabel has 3 As, 2, Bs, a C and a D in her seven classes. Calculate her GPA.
