Objective
Students will be able to recognize and practice using the 5 key steps to goal setting (worksheet).
Students will be able to identify characteristics of a complete goal and assist their peers in creating a complete goal
(worksheet, peer editing, observation).
Students will work effectively and productively with others by using constructive criticism and talking stems to support
their peers goal writing (observation).

Materials
SMART Goal Worksheet
Completed practice worksheets
Notes Packet
Constructive Criticism poster

Procedures
Teacher greets students as they enter the room.
DO NOW is written on the board: What does SMART stand for when we use it for goal setting?
Students will complete the DO NOW and turn it into the basket within the first 5 minutes of class (Timer).
As a class we will review the steps of goal setting using the SMART worksheet. I will go over the instructions for writing a
short term goal and the expectations for how the rest of class will go (PowerPoint checklist). I will introduce peer editing and
constructive criticism with talking stems. Then, students will work individually to write a personal short term goal they could
complete between today and Tuesday 11/25 (as we will check in on Tuesday to see if they accomplished their goal).

Upon completion of writing their goal individually, they will work with a partner to peer edit each others goal, looking at
goal one at a time going step by step to see that it is complete. Any edits they make will be done in a different color
pen/pencil to help the students see the changes/additions. I will rotate around the room checking in with groups to assess
the goal setting, step by step, as well as the peer editing portion and constructive criticism (see talking stems). This will
continue until the end of the period.
If the students do not finish they will continue peer editing tomorrow. If the students finish they will move on to writing a
personal long term goal individually until the end of the period. The long term goal is not for homework as they will
complete it in class on Friday. I will collect all the sheets, short term (and any long term) and keep them to review and return
to the students. This feedback will help them create more complete goals for the future, more specifically on Friday when
they finish writing the long term goal.
I will remind the students at the end of the period that both this short term goal and long term goal they will work on
tomorrow will be used for a project grade for the unit.
