Over 100 ASEAN Legislators petition for tough action on Myanmar’s regime

The ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Myanmar Caucus (AIPMC) has today communicated a

message from lawmakers in the ASEAN region to ASEAN leaders attending the 16th ASEAN
Summit in Hanoi, Vietnam to urgently take tough action on Myanmar’s military regime should
its negotiations and engagement to obtain a clear and tangible commitment for a free and fair
elections in the country fails.

105 Members of Parliament from Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Cambodia, and Singapore
endorsed a petition urging discussion and robust action on the issue of Myanmar. It calls on the
Summit to urgently discuss the dire need for actionable and meaningful solutions to the political
and human rights problems currently plaguing Myanmar.

In light of the recently announced biased laws governing Myanmar’s upcoming election, the
petitioners have voiced their grave concern over the expected 2010 general elections in Myanmar
and the petitioners urge Vietnam, as the current ASEAN Chair, to raise and solve the issue of
Myanmar’s failure to assure free, fair and inclusive elections in the country.

The 16th ASEAN Summit offers an opportunity for ASEAN’s leaders to bring about a new
approach on the issue and therefore the petitioners call on ASEAN to consider significant action,
including suspension, against Myanmar should it fail to honor its commitments as a signatory to
the ASEAN Charter and insist on maintaining its one-sided nature of the planned elections.
