1. Improveseparation/delineationofpedestrianandcyclistareasonexistingwaterfront
pathfrom72ndSt.toRiverWalkthroughnewthermoplasticpavementmarkings,
bettersignageanddistinctivepavementtreatmentsforthetwousergroups.
2. Createanalternativerouteforusebycyclistsduringhightrafficsummermonths.
Thisnewroutewilluseexistingpathstotheeastofthewaterfrontpathstartingjust
tothenorthoftherestrooms.Itwillrequirenewsignageforbothcyclistsand
pedestrians,thermoplasticpavementmarkings,barrierstokeepcyclistsfrom
accessingthewaterfrontroute,andplasticbollardswherethenewproposedroute
traversestheserviceroadatthe79thSt.trafficcircletodemarcatetherouteand
separatecyclistsfromParksDept.servicevehicles.Workcouldalsoinclude
landscapingtoreducethegradeoneithersideofthetrafficcircle,aswellasthe
creationofanewpaththatconnectsthebikepaththatrunsunderthehighway
overpasswithexistingpathsthatlinktotheproposedreroute.

ThisareaoftheHudsonRiverwaterfrontisahighlyattractivedestinationforbothNew
Yorkersandtouristsduringwarmweathermonths,andthepopularBoatBasinCafcanadd
tothecongestion.Atthesametime,theHudsonRiverGreenwaythatsharesthisspaceis
themostusedbicyclepathintheUnitedStatesandthemajornorthsouthcommuting
routeforManhattancyclists.Conflictsbetweencyclistsandthehighvolumeofpedestrians
duringcertaintimesarefrequentandinevitable.

Reroutingcyclistsontolightlyusedpathsduringtimeswhenthewaterfrontpathismost
congestedwillreducethechanceofbikepedestriancrashesandimprovetheexperience
forbothwalkersandcyclists.Moreclearlyseparatingcyclistsfrompedestriansalongthe
existingwaterfrontrouteatothertimeswillresultinsimilarbenefits.

Carewillhavetobetakentoensurethatwalkersonpathsslatedfortheproposedreroute
arefullyawarethattheyaresharingthespacewithcyclists,andviceversa.Cyclistspicking
upspeedonthedownhillportionsoneithersideofthetrafficcircleareapotentialdanger
tounwarywalkers.Conversely,notallcyclists,particularlyyoungerones,willbeableto
ridetheirbikesupthesesamegrades.
