CLPNA competency category is pediatrics, Subcategory 3 is Pediatric Pain Management. One significant learning experience is the PowerPoint and examples we have received in class. Learning how to adapt to different children within pain management situations is important to me.

I chose to do CLPNA competency category L3-1.
L is pediatrics, Subcategory 3 is Pediatric Pain Management, and the number 1 is Demonstrate knowledge and ability to assess pediatric client for pain considering: age, behaviors, cultural influence, location and intensity, physiological and psychological factors, previous medication and effectiveness, and subjective and objective data. One significant learning experience Ive had in this course related to the CLPNA competency is the PowerPoint and examples we have received in class. Learning how to adapt the strategies we learned last year throughout our NFDN courses to the kids we are currently learning about in 2005, has helped me to expand the knowledge I already had. I have learned all of the stages in which children develop and how you must change your approach to that kid depending on how old they are and what their developmental level is. The way the nurse would assess a childs pain could vary depending on their age, culture and behaviors etc. Learning about how to adapt to different children within pain management situations is important to me as my goal for the future is to work within pediatrics. Learning how to adjust how I assess and care for patients will make me a better nurse and will make the care Im providing safer and more beneficial for the patient. I would only rate myself as fair in this competency category at this moment. I have not yet been able to apply it within my own nursing practice, but I do understand the theory behind it. I believe that once I get an opportunity to work with children, my rating in this competency could go up to a good and eventually reach the excellent level.
DESCRIBE HOW YOU WILL APPLY
THIS LEARNING IN YOUR CURRENT AND FUTURE NURSING PRACTICE
It will be important to be able to apply this
knowledge whether I end up working in pediatrics or not. Knowing how to adjust your approach, especially when it comes to pain management, is very important. Everyone, especially children, express pain differently based on a variety of things. Knowing how to assess pain based on age, behaviors, and cultural factors will allow me to broaden my scope of nursing, and make me a better nurse.
