Diagnosis

Diagnosis is modular in structure and can be put together as desired. Different diagnostic
tools are required, depending on the diagnosis type. Please take the settings for the
diagnostic tools from the relevant manual.
The following diagnosis types are available:
EOBD Diagnosis (European On-Board Diagnosis)
The read-out data are exclusively exhaust-gas-related information from engine
management and transmission control.
OBD Diagnosis
Manufacturer-specific system diagnosis
Parallel Diagnosis (only in conjunction with D-Box SP)
Live measurements of actuators and sensors directly at the wiring harness and
control unit.

INFORMATION! Before beginning diagnostic work, always check the settings for the
diagnostic tool used in the program settings.

9.2 EOBD Diagnosis

It is not necessary to select a vehicle for EOBD diagnosis. The required diagnosis record is
automatically detected.
1 Start EOBD diagnosis via the [EOBD
Diagnosis ]
button or [F5 ].
o EOBD diagnosis can also be started from
the OBD Diagnosis and Exhaust Emissions Test modules.

ATTENTION! Always read and observe the INFORMATIONs and messages in the
program run.
2
3

Connect the diagnostic tool to the vehicle and the PC.

Turn on the ignition on the vehicle and click
on [Continue ]. Communication with the
control unit is established and the system
status is read out.

ATTENTION! In accordance with the manufacturer's instructions make sure during

serial OBD diagnosis that a power supply of 12 volts is guaranteed. To ensure this,
either connect an external power supply or start the engine. Otherwise a correct
diagnosis result cannot be guaranteed.

- 29 -

9.2.1 EOBD System status (Mode 1 and Mode 9)

Here you initially have the option of establishing a
new connection for communication between the
components. You must ensure here that all the
cables are connected. Communication with the
control unit has been established when the white
boxes in the current window contain numerical
values and information. These details are read out
of the control unit.
The following information is displayed:
Number of stored faults.
Status of the monitored components with display of the individual components.
Display of the record.
Vehicle identification (only supported by a few control units).
MIL status indication (Black-white indication = signalled MIL status of the control unit
is off. Red indication = signalled MIL Status is on).
Display of the address and the addressed control unit.
9.2.2 EOBD Data lists (Mode 1)
Here you have the option of specifically calling up
the data lists available for the connected vehicle.
Highlight the desired measured values in the
selection window. These values are then displayed
on a blue background. Click on the [OK ] button to
confirm. The values are now displayed in the "Value"
area. It is possible here to call up only individual
data lists or all the available data lists. You can
display as many data lists as you need for
diagnosis. Minimum (Min.) and Maximum (Max.)
values of the current measurement are also
displayed.
To select new data lists, click on the [Select data lists] button. Here you can select other
values. If you cancel a value by clicking on it again, it will no longer be displayed.
9.2.3 Data list (graphic) (Mode 1)
In this function you can select and display in graphic
form vehicle-specific data lists. The advantage of
this view is that the values are displayed
dynamically. To do so, select the desired values in
the list box. These are now displayed in digital and
graphic form.
Four different values can be displayed
simultaneously.
You can start or stop the progress of the display with
the [Start/Stop ] button.

- 30 -

You can move the movable measuring point with the mouse by clicking once in each case
to lock and to release. The current value is now displayed at the corresponding position
where the measuring point is locked (meaning of axes: x-axis = time; y-axis = signal level).
The value display is geared during measurement flexibly to the Maximum (Max.) values.
9.2.4 Ambient data/FreezeFrames (Mode 2)
The control unit automatically sets the priority to one
of the read-out faults. In this function this fault is
displayed in the upper bar of the screen. The
ambient data of the trouble code (= the conditions
under which the trouble code was stored) are
displayed in the lower bar in the window.

9.2.5 EOBD fault memory (Mode 3 and Mode 7)

Temporary and debounced faults are displayed with
their P0 trouble codes here.
Temporary faults:
If a fault is read out during diagnosis, it is initially
stored in the temporary fault memory as a briefly
occurred and unconfirmed fault. In the case of this
fault type, the MI lamp is normally not activated.
Debounced faults:
If a fault is categorised by the control unit as
Attention or if the fault stored in the temporary fault
memory occurs again and again in a specific start cycle, it is confirmed by the control unit
and displayed as a debounced fault. In the case of this fault type, the MI lamp is normally
activated. The fault can also be recategorised by the control unit to temporary status if it no
longer occurs after further start attempts (usually after 40 starts).
P0 trouble codes:
These are standardised trouble codes. You will find a corresponding explanatory text to
these trouble codes, with a help text in the program display.
P1 trouble codes:
These are manufacturer-specific codes which are read out from the control unit. You can
displays the descriptions for these codes by clicking on the [Additional information ]
button provided the vehicles has been selected in Vehicle selection and the specific vehicle
lists are stored.

- 31 -

9.2.6 Delete fault memory (Mode 4)

The faults of Modes 3 and 7 (temporary and debounced faults) can be deleted with this
function.

ATTENTION! The Delete function also deletes simultaneously the faults in Mode 2 with

the associated ambient data and the sensor values from Mode 5 and resets the status of
the component/readiness codes to "not tested" (1).
It is therefore recommended to call up and archive the above-mentioned data before
deletion.
9.2.7 Oxygen sensors (Mode 5)
After the test cycle is completed, values of the
lambda oxygen sensors are displayed here. The
values shown here are static (constant) ones. No
values are displayed here if the test sequence is not
completed (readiness codes 0). This mode is not
supported by all the control units. No value is output
here in the case of wide-band sensors.
The control units output many different values (max.
9 standardised values per oxygen sensor).
Manufacturer-specific values are also output.

$01: Threshold voltage - rich to lean

$02: Threshold voltage - lean to reach
$03: Lower voltage - constant for switching
time calculation
$04: Upper voltage - constant for switching
time calculation
$05: Switching time from rich to lean
$06: Switching time from lean to rich
$07: Lowest sensor voltage of driving cycle
$08: Highest sensor voltage of driving cycle
$09: Time between transitions

9.2.8 Display of measured values (Mode 6/manufacturer-specific)

The measured values of functions of noncontinuously monitored systems are displayed here.
Test values of temporarily tested manufacturerspecific functions are issued. These values are static
ones.
9.2.9

Actuator test (Mode 8/manufacturerspecific)

Still only supported by very few control units and
serves to activate components in the vehicle.

- 32 -

- 37 -

9.3.10 Reading out data lists

This function for reading out data lists is available in many systems (also known as
measured value block or actual values). It provides measured and control values from the
operating state of an assembly. These values are received by the sensors of an assembly.
The control unit converts them into decimal values with a unit.
The values are only displayed in full when the assembly is in operation. It should be borne
in mind here that reading out data lists with engine management only proves useful when
the ignition is turned on or with the engine running; however, diagnosis of the immobiliser
can provide useful values even when the ignition is turned off.
1 When the [Read out data lists] function is
selected, the first set of data lists is
automatically loaded and displayed.
2 When the [Next data list] button is pressed,
the next set of data lists is read out and
displayed.
o The number of the currently displayed data
list and the total number (amount) of data
lists are displayed.
3 When the [Previous data list] button is
pressed, the last data list is displayed again.
4 Click on [Snapshot] to freeze the current data. These can be printed out via [Print] .
o If communication is broken off, it is automatically re-established after a warning
message.

- 38 -

9.3.11 Actuator test

In this test, actuators (electronic components of the selected system) are activated. How this
test works differs from manufacturer to manufacturer. For example, in the case of VAG
vehicles, the order of the activated actuators is prespecified. In the case of other
manufacturers, the actuators can be selected from a list.
1 Turn off the ignition for 5 seconds prior to a new actuator test.
2 Please observe the warning with the vehicle-specific particulars.
[Start]
o Starts the actuator test and activates the first component in the test chain.
[Continue]
o Activates the next component in the test chain.
[Stop]
o Stops component activation.
The currently activated component is displayed or can be selected here.

ATTENTION - PETROL/GASOLINE ENGINES! After the test, start the engine with the

throttle valve fully deflected (to avoid possible starting difficulties after activation of the
fuel injectors).
In the case of a function without a description from the manufacturer, the function number
of the activated component is displayed. (This enables assistance to be provided over the
hotline.)
If communication is broken off, it is re-established automatically after a warning message
(if, for example, the engine has to be switched off, communication is forcibly broken off).
9.3.12 Coding control unit (ECU)
This function enables your to code control units with or without additional input parameters.
In the case of the immobiliser, it is possible to reprogram the ignition keys by entering a
security code.
To execute a coding function, please adhere to the following sequence:
If available, call up [Help] and read the
exact description of the coding procedure.
If a parameter has to be entered, click on
the [OK] button. This opens a window in
which you can enter the parameter.
Observe the prescribed sequence while
adhering to the time limits. Start the coding
function by clicking on the [OK] button.
Wait for feedback from the system and if
necessary follow additional instructions.
If a fault occurs during coding, the preset system parameters normally remain valid.
Newly input parameters are accepted and thus become active only after coding has
been fully and correctly carried out.

- 39 -

ATTENTION! To ensure that the desired result is obtained, it is absolutely essential to

adhere to the specified coding sequence.
The security codes are confidential information and may not under circumstances be
passed on to third parties.

9.3.13 Calibration
The Calibration function enables vehicle components to be learned or adjusted. This is
necessary because modern control units adapt themselves to component wear and
automatically make corrections in the specified tolerance band. If a worn component is
replaced by a new component, the control unit must be reset again to the standard values.

INFORMATION! this function is different from system to system. Please, read and
follow always the help and indications in the program
ATTENTION! Read [Help ] before executing a calibration function. This section

describes in detail the prerequisites for successful execution as well as any particulars.
To start the calibration, click on the [OK ] button that follows the name of the corresponding
component. You will then be referred again to the operating conditions which must be in
place.
9.3.14 Analog systems
If (digital) serial diagnosis is not available for the selected vehicle, it could still be possible to
carry out an (analog) scan of the flash codes.
Start OBD diagnosis.
Click on the [Additional information]
symbol in the symbol bar to locate the
position of the diagnosis connection.
Start diagnosis as you would OBD
diagnosis.
How to carry out an analog trouble code
scan is explained in the window that is now
displayed.
Move downwards with the blue bar. The
read-out trouble code is broken down in the
trouble code table.

- 40 -

10 Parallel Diagnosis (via the Control Unit)

Self-diagnosis of the vehicle systems unfortunately does not check and detect all the
electronic components and faults. More exact information is obtained either with direct
measurements at the wiring harness and components or with single pin testing via a PIN
box, but this usually takes a long time.
Parallel diagnosis essentially involves nothing more than checking components and the
wiring harness.
Thus temporary faults appears which can be detected neither via the internal control unit
memory nor via a serial interface.
Parallel diagnosis facilitates troubleshooting beyond reading out the control unit. Each PIN
on the control unit and wiring harness is automatically scanned individually. This is
necessary if the vehicle has no serial interface or in order to localise faults which were not or
not clearly stored in the fault memory.
The complete system is tested, not just the system monitored under limited conditions by the
control unit.
A significant advantage of parallel measurement lies in the fact that each PIN can also be
individually tested in the form of parameter scans (or by means of oscilloscope).

- 41 -

10.2 Selecting the vehicle/record

Select in the diagnosis module the diagnosis

type Parallel diagnosis.
Several vehicle variations appear in the list if
several records are available for the selected
vehicle. Then select the vehicle to be tested.
The positions of the control unit and the
adapter cable to be used (green dot) are
displayed in the diagram.
Connect the specified adapter cable.

ATTENTION! Always make sure when disconnecting control units from the wiring

harness that the ignition is turned off.

ATTENTION! Effects comparable with the situation after the vehicle battery has been
disconnected for an extended period of time can occur; for example, basic settings and
learned data can be lost.
ATTENTION! Please observe the manufacturer's instructions without fail.

10.3 Performing parallel diagnosis

Click on the measurement you wish to carry out.
Ground test
o This test checks the ground connections of the wiring harness, the control unit and
the components. During the test the ground points and the components to be
tested are subjected to a defined current. It is important to make sure here that
the control unit is not connected to the Y-adapter.
Parallel measurement
o This is the most important measurement of parallel diagnosis. Because a control
unit can have over 150 pins, which would have to be manually tested in a timeconsuming operation, parallel measurement provides a convenient, automated
test sequence for the most important pins. Here some components are also tested
several times in various operating states.
Status test
o Here the most important system measurement data appear in a rapid overview.
They are continuously measured and displayed. No scheduled data are displayed
during this test. This test is carried out with a connected control unit.
Drive test
o Some faults occur only sporadically while driving and are consequently difficult to
locate in the garage/workshop. Here you can load a vehicle-specific test program
into the diagnosis box and perform a test drive with the connected diagnosis box.
A display will appear if a fault has occurred and you can evaluate the fault back
in the garage/workshop.

- 42 -

10.3.1 Operation

ATTENTION! Always read and observe the notes and warnings in the program run.
Start the test by clicking on
[Automatic ]
o All the components are automatically
tested one after the other.
o Which component is currently being
measured is displayed in the list. The
measured values and the limit values are
displayed on the right.
o The test stops if a component is not OK
(measurement highlighted in red).
o You can test this component again with
[Repeat ].
o The test is continued with [Continue ].
[Step by step ]
o The components are individually tested step by step. This provides you with the

highlighted in the list in red script.
Each pin in the list can now be manually selected and repeatedly measured
individually with the [Oscilloscope ] and [Measurement ] functions.
During measurement you are prompted to create certain functions or operating
states. For example, actuating the accelerator pedal to test the function of the
throttle valve potentiometer or to show this with the oscilloscope. For this purpose,
pay attention to the prompts at the lower edge of the screen.
The status of the operating state is displayed in the first column in the list
o A = Ignition off
o B = Ignition on
o C = Engine on
o D = Engine accelerated
In the [Additional information ]
you are given further important information on
components, test values, wiring diagram, etc.

10.4 Measuring tools

With the integrated measuring tools you can measure and display any desired values with
the measuring probe. Start this module by clicking once on the [Measuring tools ]
symbol in the symbol bar. This module contains three different tools:
Breakout box
Multimeter
Oscilloscope
In order to measure values, the diagnosis box must be connected
to the PC and the vehicle's power supply must also be connected.
Connect the measuring sensor to the diagnosis box (PROBE
socket). Observe the notes on connecting the diagnosis box.
10.4.1 Multimeter
Click on the left side on the button showing the plus sign in order to select the
measured variable/unit.
o The values are continuously measured. The
largest and smallest values since the start of
the measurement are displayed on the
right.

10.4.2 Breakout box

With the breakout box you can measure and display
individual pins of the parallel adapter cable. Here
you can view up to three measured values
simultaneously.
After selecting the breakout box, select in
Cable selection the Y-adapter cable used.
Click on the left side on the button showing
the plus sign in order to select the measured

10.4.3 Oscilloscope
The oscilloscope displays measured values as a time characteristic. The measured values of
the last 2 minutes are saved. You can record measured values with the measuring pin or via
the parallel adapter cables.
To record measured values with the measuring pin, insert it in the ABS and Probe
connection on the diagnosis box.

Basic functions:
Measuring pin:
o If you are recording the measured values with the measuring pin, select PROBE. If
you are recording the measured values with a parallel cable, select a "pin" on
which you would like to measure.
Y-axis:
o Select from the three value ranges for the Y-axis. With the larger resolution (top
button), the values appear larger (zoom).
Start, Stop:
o Press Start to start the measurement. You must press Stop before closing the
window or changing the detail settings.
Print:
o You can print out the display at any time.
Shift displayed area:
o Click with the mouse in the display. Press and hold down the (left) mouse button
in so doing. Now move the mouse to move the display area.
Enlarge display:
o Click with the right mouse button in the display. Press and hold down the button
in so doing. Now move the mouse to bring up a rectangle. As soon as you
release the button, the content of the rectangle is enlarged to the entire area of
the display!

Detail:
X-Y range:
o Press the four areas to move the visible area of the display. (Move to the left to
view older stored values).
X-resolution:
o Select from the three value ranges for the X-axis. With a smaller resolution
(bottom button), more values fit on the screen (overview).
Channels and view:
If your diagnosis box can measure on several channels, you can measure and
display up to four pins simultaneously.
Channels:
o Switch for example to 2 and set the pin for the second channel. (Active, Pin and
Resolution are set separately for each channel. All other settings such as e.g. Xresolution are the same for all channels).
View:
o Click on the three buttons to select from the four variants for the view (individual,
on top of each other, next to each other).
Trigger:
o During triggering, the values are measured and normally displayed until a value
breaks through the set threshold value (in the direction of the set edge). A yellow
cross indicates this point, the drawing is recorded and only a few values are
added on the right.
ON, OFF:
o The trigger mode is activated when the switch shows ON.
Channel:
o Select a channel which is to be triggered.
Edge:
o Click on the arrow to establish whether the rising or falling edge is to be
triggered.
Threshold value:
o The value at which triggering is to occur.
Mode:
o The display stops as soon as triggering has occurred. If the mode is individual,
the measurement also stops. If the mode is cont., measurement proceeds
continuously (without the values being displayed) and, if the measurement breaks
through the threshold value again, the new triggering is displayed.
Pretrigger time:
o The time period which is shown prior to triggering. Set a higher value to see more
values prior to triggering.
