This course examines the broad range of behavioral science theory that describes
organizational culture in todays organizations. Focusing on the role that organizational culture
plays in building successful organizations, it examines various structures, designs, and models,
as well as the role of ethical and values-based leadership. Organizational behavior (OB) could be
defined as the study that investigates the impact of individual and group dynamics in an
organizational setting. (Joyce Osland, 2011) Organizational behavior encompasses a wide range
of topics, such as human behavior, change, leadership, teams, etc.
After participating in the Organizational Development and Behavior class I have learned
many new tools to assist me in my future leadership roles. These theories, many of which are
based on history and learned behavior, have widened my perspective on approaching many
different situations. Organizational Behavior is an essential tool for managing effective teams
and it helps to understand and predict human behavior in an organization. It studies on how
organizations can be more structured accurately, and how several outside situations can effect
organizations within.
Two concepts of the organizational development and behavior class that I want to reflect on are
communication and motivation. For me personally because I work in Human Resources these are
two concepts that are very important to me because they are key in wanting to be successful in
any role or position you are in. You have to know how to communicate well with others and
you also need to be motivated and willing to motivate others in the process.
Communication and motivation plays an important role in managing the human resource of any
company or organization. Motivation and communication can be considered as inseparable in
This is particularly true of where I work because understanding the type of people that you work
with, for, or supervise, is a key to knowing how to influence and effectively communicate with
them. Communication probably is more important out of the two because without good
communication within a group setting, the development and performance of the team cannot be
met. The individuals should have one common goal and be able to communicate successfully in
order to meet that goal. It's amazing to me how such a small error in communication can cause
such a huge error in the end.
The reason these two terms of organizational behavior are so important and interesting to
me is because I also believe they hold the most relevance to my work organization and role.
Although communication and group performance are not the only factors in organizational
behavior, they are the ones that hold more interest to me.
In conclusion I will definitely be more aware of my future leadership role(s) in the future
based on the theories that I have learned in the class. All the assessment and other insights from
organizational theory will help provide an excellent base for me to understand that my leadership
skills need to implement communication and a motivational aspect alongside with collaboration
and I must be adaptable to whatever situation that I am placed in.
