As sometimes a student finds
themselves in a class that is not right
for them, I have put together a
Frequently Asked Questions section
for you to consider if HAAP is the class
for you or not.
What is HAAP?
The human body is a very remarkable object. Too often all of its complexities are taken
for granted, and it is often abused as if it is insignificant. HAAP is a class that seeks to
enlighten the student by providing hands-on experiences with many of systems and
produce a greater appreciation of the human body. You will be expected to follow a
rigorous schedule of quizzes and tests, with many dissections integrated into the class
sequence.

Do we dissect in HAAP?
YES! Dissection is the primary means by which you obtain hands-on experiences in
HAAP. You will be placed into a dissection group of up to 3 people for the entire
semester. All dissection quizzes and tests will be taken as a group, and all in your
group will receive the same grade.

What is expected of me in HAAP?

Besides being present everyday, you are expected to arrive on time to class.
Sometimes this is neglected in other classes. Not in HAAP. Detention can be a good
learning experiences, and will be prescribed if necessary.
If you miss class because of an excused absence or school activity it is YOUR
responsibility to find out what you missed, and when it is due. In order to find what
youve missed, check the website. If you miss a lab or a test/quiz, you have 1 week
to make that up, and it is expected that you will make it up immediately upon your
return.
If you miss class due to an unexcused absence are not allowed to turn in work you
missed for any points. This includes tests and quizzes.

What materials do I need for HAAP?

1. Notebook dedicated to HAAP
2. 3-ring binder - You will be expected to maintain a notebook and 3-ring binder
where you keep your notes, labs, quizzes, tests, and other assignments in
chronological order. An organized system will be your chief study guide in this
class, and will help you be successful in any class. Take this seriously!!
3. Colored pencils

What about days I am absent?

HAAP moves quickly, and any material you miss will need to be obtained when you
return. Check the website for information on what was completed in each class period.
If absent for a quiz or test, you will be expected to make it up AS SOON AS YOU
RETURN. If absent for a dissection quiz or test you will be expected to make it up on
your own.

How will I be graded?

1. Quizzes (30%) - You will be allowed to skip two (2) quizzes over the course of the
semester for no cost to your grade.
2. Tests (30%)
3. Quizzes over NEJM Medical Terms (15%)
4. Journal Entries (15%)
5. Semester Project (10%) Due in January

What is this Journal you speak of?

As part of your semester grade, you will need to submit 1 journal entry per week over
the course of the semester. They are always due on Monday. Weeks without Mondays
are exempt for Journal Entries. The entries may be on Articles read outside of the class
pertaining to HAAP (primary scientific research or review/newspaper articles e.g.
Scientific American, Science News, Science, Nature, NEJM, JAMA)
1. Questions posed by students with possible experiments that could be
performed to answer the questions
2. Thoughts or insights into classroom discussions, videos and/or TV shows or
books
Entries need to be at least one single page (handwritten or otherwise). They should
be your opinion and insights. Please do not paraphrase articles unless it
enhances your journal.

Lastly:
Focus.Hard Work.Perseverance. You are expected to demonstrate all of
these during the course of the semester. This is a college preparatory course and you
are expected to use the resources available to you to pass this course. No one is
without the ability to pass this class. There are high expectations placed on you in this
course.
And, incase I missed anythingall school rules listed in the Student Handbook are also
in effect in this classroom.
