ESSENTIAL UNIT 4 (E04)

(Basic Web Page Design)
(JULY 2010)

Unit Statement: In this unit, the student will master the skills necessary to create a useful
Web page both manually using a simple text editor, and with modern Web design
programs. The student will apply these skills to create a web page that presents material
from another class, and to create a useful widget.
Essential Outcomes: (assessed for mastery)
1. The Student Will research and present on an aspect of Web design history (e.g.
ARPA, invention of html, browser wars, development of XML, etc.)
2. TSW create an html page with <header>, <title>, <body>, <h1>, <image>, <a
href>, <b>, <hr>, <font>, <p>, and <pre> tags using a low ascii text editor.
3. TSW create an html page with table, form, rich media (flash or video), and/or
image map elements using a WYSIWYG editor.
4. TSW create a Web page as a presentation for another class. The Web page should
intelligently present the information and include links, images, multimedia,
captions, and call out boxes.
5. TWS create a Web page that solves a real-world problem based on user input and
using modified JavaScript or similar code. Examples are a page that
calculates a grade based on a rubric, converting an unknown amount of
home currency into local currency, displaying products in different colors,
converting text case, etc.
Introduced & Practiced:
1. The Student Will correctly use current Web terminology including HTML, XML,
server, web and ftp clients, static, dynamic, http, ftp, JavaScript, and AJAX.
2. TSW will discuss the principles of information design and usability.
3. TSW define a content management system.
Suggested Materials:
Internet Browsers with adequate Internet access are required. The Mozilla browser,
available from mozilla.com, is currently recommended. Although Notepad will work as a
text editor, NoteTab is a far superior free download. If Adobe Dreamweaver is available, it
is the preferable WYSIWYG editor, and can actually be used in text editing mode.
Currently two good free alternatives to Dreamweaver that you can download are
CoffeeCup (easy) and Komodo Edit (advanced). There is copious information online on
Web usability and Web terminology. One source of ideas for TSW 5 is the Javascript
Source.

Assessment Rubric E04 Basic Web Page Design

The use of the following checklist is suggested, but not mandatory. Rather it is a tool to
assess students on essential outcomes. A level mastery means that a student has mastered
all essential parts of the unit at an appropriate high level. The student consistently
demonstrated noteworthy achievement of high quality, particularly in the higher order
thinking or performance skills. B level mastery means that a student has mastered all
essential parts of the unit at an appropriately high level in which the student successfully
engaged in higher thinking or performance skills. The student may receive a D
(deficient) if they have not made a reasonable effort on one or more outcomes.
TSW
1. Creates Web page using
specified html tags.

modifies code to
position elements of
the web page as

tags. Student can
make limited
changes to markup
to change page
design as desired.

P Progress

created a page using
the specified tags, or
can not edit markup
to effect desired
changes.
