Eleventh International Symposium on the Contributions of Psychology to Peace

Theme: Improving Young Peoples Lives in Post Conflict Societies
Under the auspices of the Committee for the Psychological Study of Peace,
International Union of Psychological Science
Organized by the Department of Applied Psychology, University College Cork, Ireland & the
School of Psychology, University of Ulster, Northern Ireland
Cork and Coleraine,
June 11-17, 2009
You are cordially invited to participate in the 11th International Symposium on the Contributions of
Psychology to Peace, June 11-17, 2009. Your name is included in an invitation list of around 40
participants proposed by the International Committee for the Psychological Study of Peace.
International Symposia on the Contributions of Psychology to Peace bring together approximately
40 invited participants from around the world every other year. These symposia promote
intercultural research and practice on peace and social justice issues. As the symposium theme
suggests, participants will be invited to address the theme Improving Young Peoples lives in PostConflict Societies as it relates to a wide range of topics that bear on the psychology of peace. This
includes particular areas of interest and expertise such as nonviolence, conflict management,
peace education, social justice movements, post-war reconstruction, reconciliation and sustainable
development.
The symposia enable scholars to present their current research in peace psychology. Additionally,
symposia provide a platform for intercultural dialogue and the exchange of ideas and experiences
aimed at the reduction of intercultural biases and ethnocentrism in research and practice in peace
psychology. The goals are to bring forward voices from cultures and situations that are typically
not included in peace discourses, to empower local communities, and to build an international
community that promotes peace-related research and action. A particular emphasis is placed on
inviting both established and younger scholars covering a wide range of societies where peace
and conflict are important issues.
The 11th biennial symposium will be held in Cork, in the Republic of Ireland and Coleraine, in
Northern Ireland (which is part of the United Kingdom). The timing, location, and expertise of
participants will present a unique opportunity to form professional relationships, develop projects,
and advance policies that are vital for international security and human well being.
We are very excited to plan a week full of presentations, exchanges, dialogues, cultural forums
and recreational interludes. We hope you will join us. In the event that you know you will be

unable to attend, notification of this to by email (see below) would be greatly appreciated so that
we may offer your spot to another colleague.
Hoping to see you in Ireland in 2009!

SYMPOSIUM THEME AND CONTEXT
The main theme for the 2009 symposium is Improving Young Peoples Lives in Post Conflict
Societies. The two venues for the symposium are particularly well suited for research and practice
on issues relating to peace & conflict. The signing of the 1998 Belfast Agreement in Northern
Ireland created conditions to work to establish an environment of peace. At the same time, the
people in the South voted to agree to the abolition of the Republic of Irelands territorial claim to
Northern Ireland via the modification of its constitution. These developments heralded complex
negotiations to bring to an end 30 years of sectarian violence known in common parlance as the
Troubles. In the symposium, we expect to address the contribution of psychological research &
practice in the improvement of young peoples lives in post-conflict situations. This theme is
broadly interpreted to include the family, community, political & sociocultural systems in which
young peoples lives are embedded.
PROGRAM
The program will be implemented in two locations, Cork and Coleraine. It is expected participants
will arrive on June 11 and leave from Coleraine on the 17th June 2009. The program for Cork
(June 12th & June 13th). will consist of presentations in open plenary with dialogue, Q & A sessions,
cultural activities and group dinners. Those whose first language is not English will be given
additional time for presentations and discussions.
On June 14th, the group will travel together to Coleraine and will have the opportunity to work
together for a further two days, June 15th and 16th. The program will combine academic
presentations/discussions with an applied program that will complement the main scholarly

3
program, and participants will have the opportunity to engage in site visits and hear invited
lectures from community workers and those engaged in peace activism in Northern Ireland. Over
the course of the week, there will also be time scheduled for interest-based working groups based
on clusters of participants interests or sub-themes. The working groups are envisioned to facilitate
small group dialogue and future research collaborations

SUBMITTING A PAPER FOR PRESENTATION

Individual paper presentations may be theoretical, empirical, or applied; but they should be
scientifically grounded and original. Papers that cluster around the theme (Improving Young
Peoples Lives in Post Conflict Societies) will be peer reviewed and considered for publication in a
volume of the Peace Psychology Book Series by Springer Publishers.

4
Although participants are encouraged to focus on the theme of the symposium, any
empirical/theoretical work or action project that relates to peace psychology is welcome. In
addition to paper presentations, the conference will include several forums for dialogue among
participants to create opportunities for the exchange of ideas. There also will be a strong cultural
program and opportunities to engage with local partners and organisations.
In order to participate in the symposium, submit a title and abstract (250 words or fewer) by 30
January, 2009 to Angela Veale (a.veale@ucc.ie).
Participants should be prepared to talk about their work for 10 to 15 minutes. Some participants
are likely to prefer an individual paper presentation while others may prefer a roundtable
discussion, poster, or some other format. Kindly let us know your preference when you submit the
abstract.
LOCATION AND FACILITIES
The symposium will take place in two places: Cork & Coleraine.
Cork city is Irelands second city (after Dublin), although Cork people believe Cork to be the true
capital of Ireland! (for a light-hearted view of Cork, see http://www.peoplesrepublicofcork.com/).
The conference will be hosted within University College Cork (UCC). University College Cork was
originally established in 1845 as one of three Queen's Colleges in Cork, Galway and Belfast. The
UCC campus is noted for its mature well-wooded grounds and for its beautiful Gothic revival-style
Main Quadrangle buildings, modeled on a typical Oxford college by the renowned Cork architect of
the mid 19th century - Sir Thomas Deane. For further information see
http://www.ucc.ie/en/VisitorstoUCC. Participants will avail of campus accommodation: see
http://www.ucccampusaccommodation.com/sum.asp
Our second site at the University of Ulster, Coleraine Campus; The Coleraine campus was
developed as a university campus in the late 1960s and is today a large complex of modern and
original buildings set in mature parkland. The location is ideal for exploring the scenic North coast
including County Donegal to the west, and to the east the Giants Causeway, Bushmills and the
Antrim coast road. Travel to and from Belfast and Derry is made easy by regular bus and train
services. for further information see: http://www.ulster.ac.uk/campus/coleraine/
Travel arrangements, climate, dress
In June, the climate in Ireland is generally warm, average temperatures around 15 -22C. Light to
moderate rain can be expected occasionally. Weather may be dull or cloudy to warm and sunny.
Further details can be seen at Met. Ireland website http://www.met.ie/climate/climate-ofireland.asp . A webpage will be set up in early January with information to assist people with
travel arrangements/ visas and other information.

Funding possibilities
The symposium organizers are keenly aware of the financial limitations of some of our outstanding
scholars around the world, which does not make it always possible for them to participate. The
symposium organizers are working hard on raising money for this event and hopefully we are able
to completely or partly support some participants to attend the symposium. If you need financial
support, please send an application with details concerning your situation (employment or study
situation, travel costs and other relevant information) to:
