THE CONNECTORS- Part 1


1. Adding information ( para aadir informacin )

Also ( tambin ): Delante del verbo o entre el auxiliar y el verbo.


She also speaks German/We have also bought a house.

Too ( tambin ): Al final de la frase. She speaks German too.

Furthermore, Moreover, In addition ( adems ): Delante de la frase y separado por coma:


In addition/Furthermore/Moreover she speaks German.

Besides ( adems ): Delante de la frase y separado por coma: Besides, she speaks German.
o seguido de un nombre, adjetivo o de un verbo significa adems de: Besides Italian,
she speaks German.

For example/For instance ( por ejemplo ): Delante de la frase y separados pro coma o
acompaando a otra palabra:
We need some things. For instance, we have to buy a new mobile/For instance, a new
mobile.

Apart from ( aparte de ): Apart from Italian, she speaks German.

As well as ( al igual que ): She speaks Italian as well as German.

Whats more ( lo que es ms ): Roses are beautiful and, whats more, they arent very
expensive.

2. To express a contrast ( para expresar un contraste )

But ( pero ): I like it but it is expensive.

However/Nevertheless/still ( sin embargo ):


She was quite ill. Nevertheless/However/Still, she went to school.

While/Whereas ( mientras que ): This TV program is really boring while/whereas that one is
great.

In spite of/despite ( a pesar de ): In spite of/despite the cold, she went out in shorts.

Although/Even though ( aunque ): Although/Even though it was cold, she went out in shorts.

Instead ( en cambio

): If you don't have olive oil, you can use sunflower oil instead.

Yet ( aunque ): The weather was cold, yet bright and sunny.

Even if: I want to buy it even if I have to save money for a month.

3. Giving a reason ( para dar una razn )

Because ( + sentence ), ( porque ), Because of ( +sustantivo ) ( por/ a causa de )

4. To describe a result ( para describir un resultado )


Therefore, So, Consequently ( por lo tanto ): Our teacher was ill, therefore we didnt take

So/Thus ( as que ): There was nothing on TV, so I decided to go to bed.
As a result/ As a consequence ( por consiguiente ): I missed the bus. As a result, I had to
wait.
For this reason ( por esta razn ): The teacher was ill and, for this reason, we didnt take the
exam.
That is why ( por eso ): I dislike pasta. That is why I never go to Italian restaurants.

5. To show purpose ( para mostrar propsito )

In order ( not ) to seguido de infinitive ( para ( no ) ): I'm going to Ireland in order to visit
my family.
So as ( not ) to seguido de infinitivo ( para ( no ) ): I went to the post office so as to buy
some stamps.
So that ( para que ): I am saving money so that I can buy a new car.
To ( para ) seguido de infinitivo: I went to the post office to buy some stamps.
For ( para ) seguido de sustantivo: I work for money.
For ( para ) seguido de gerundio: I use this for cleaning.

6. To describe similarity ( para tratar la semejanza )

Similarly/Likewise ( igualmente ): Cars must stop at red traffic lights. Similarly, bicycles
should stop too.

7. To express personal opinions ( para expresar opiniones )

On the whole ( por lo general ): On the whole, the beach in Sanlcar is overcrowded.

10.To list points ( para hacer una relacin de puntos )

To begin with/To start with/In the first place/First/Firstly/First of all ( para empezar ):

11.To introduce opposing points ( para presentar hechos opuestos )
