A government is necessary to develop laws and

protect our rights and property of individuals.

WHAT ARE LAWS AND WHY DO

WE HAVE THEM?

Laws are important rules written and carried

out by government.

We have rules to keep people safe and to

keep order.

For example: a speed limit sign is meant to

keep motorists on the road safe.

How does this law keep people safe?

OUR GOVERNMENT TODAY.

Our government was formed based on

contributions from Greece and Rome.

Remember, Greece was the birthplace of

democracy!

Rome used a representative democracy. This

means people elect a small group of people
to make the rules and laws.

THERE ARE 3 BASIC PRINCIPLES

WITHIN OUR GOVERNMENT:
Basic principles are the rights that Americans
are born with. These can not be taken away!

Liberty
Pursuit of happiness

You are promised freedom and are able to

take advantage of many opportunities!
All people should be treated with equality.
This means people are treated fairly.

COMMUNITY

Our community is a place where people live,

work, and play. What community do we live
in???

How can we serve (help) our community??

Volunteer
Help with community projects
Serve as a government official (mayor!)
Vote
Join the military- navy, army, marines, etc.

MEMORIAL DAY

Memorial Day celebrates those who have

died in wars while serving in the military.

We will celebrate this holiday this year on

May 25th.

VETERANS DAY

We celebrate Veterans Day to honor those who have

served in the military. When you see a veteran, you
should thank them for working to keep us safe!

This is celebrated each year on November 3rd or 4th.
