5. Personal Response for the 5 poems you find and love (1 paragraph for each one). You must
explain the poetic significance of each poem. What draws you to this poem? Why do you
think it is an exemplar example of poetry? Make sure to cite appropriately where this
poem came from on your Works Cited page.
6. Poetic Analysis short essays for 3 poems that you choose to analyze. You may use poems
that we have read together in class but make sure to go beyond what weve already
discussed. In your analysis you should analyze the poem for deeper meaning. You may
want to focus on a theme, use of poetic devices, biographical influences, symbolism etc.
These short essays should be 3-4 paragraphs and demonstrate your comprehension of not
only the poem itself but also the how it fits into the genre of poetry.
Honors: You will pick an artist whose music you enjoy listening to. Pick three of your
favorite songs from this artist. You will write two five paragraph essays about two of the
following three topics:
a. Theme study- analyze all three songs for similar themes. Write a fve paragraph
essay in which you provide evidence of your analysis

b. Symbol study- examine all three songs for common use of symbols. Identify the
symbols and what they represent. Use evidence from the text to support your
analysis
c. Biographical Study- Research the life story of the artist. Write an essay about how
the songs and their topics reflect the life of the artist.
7. Overall Reflection Write a one-page reflection on your entire portfolio that shares your
thoughts on poetry throughout the project and at the end of it. You can be honest but be
sure to include any ways your feelings about poetry may have changed throughout the
unit and your feelings on writing original poetry.
8. Bibliography page, which you title Works Cited. On this page, you will cite the 5 poems
that you find and love and also your Poetic Analysis short essay poems. Heres how to do
this:
Did you find it in a book? If so Lastname, First name. "Title of Poem." Title of Collection. Ed.
Editor's Name(s). City of Publication: Publisher, Year. Page range of entry. Medium of Publication.
Ex: Kincaid, Jamaica. "Girl." The Vintage Book of Contemporary American Short Stories. Ed.

Did you find it online? If so Last name, First name. Title of Poem. Name of Website.
Medium of Publication. Date of access.
Ex: Kipling, Rudyard. If. Poetry Foundation.Org. Web. 15 Jan 2013.
Presentation:

Each poem should be neatly presented. It must be typed or photocopied.

Think about how to illustrate the poems. Find art or draw pictures that somehow go along
with your poems or the thematic relevance of the poem whenever possible.
Personality, personality, personality! Remember, the theme of this unit is Who I Am
your portfolio should show me who you are.
Neatness counts!
Aim for dramatic effect. Color can be used effectively on your cover, on your poetry pages
themselves, and in pictures.
Blog- create a page or tb on your blog and post your final product there.
One of your posts must be a video post of you performing one of your poems. This can be
an original piece or a piece you found and love from another author!
