Steps to solving word problems

Step 1: Understanding The Problem
It is important for children to understand the word problem that they receive, before
they begin solving it.
A good way to help children grasp a question's requirement is to break the question
up into smaller parts. Alternatively, parents can also provide guiding questions for
the children to help them pick out the important information inside the question.
Step 2: Deciding On An Approach
There are many approaches (different heuristics) to solving word problems.
Children will need to decide on the approach they wish to use based on the
question's requirement.
Step 3: Solving The Problem
After deciding on the approach, children will proceed on to solve the word problem
with the selected approach. Over here, children will need to have a good knowledge
of the approach selected in order to solve the problem.
Step 4: Checking The Solution
The last step for children to take when solving word problems will be to check their
worked solution to ensure that they have solved the problem correctly.
For this step, children will need to make reference to the question provided and do
the necessary comparison.

ICT-enabled lessons

a. Self-directed learning
Pupils can select the questions that they have done incorrectly
and can view the videos to improve their problem-solving skills.

b. Peer/Collaborative work (Students)

High Ability pupils can be provided with more opportunities
(ipad) to record their videoed explanations and these can be
sent to the class blog and then the rest of the pupils can
provide feedback and alternative methods.

Collaborative
Learning

Peer Teaching

Why video explanations?

Students can view the videos at their own pace at home.
They can repeat their viewing so that they can gain full
mastery of the methods learnt in class to solve the word
problems.
The viewing of the videos at home provides opportunities
for parent-child bonding. Both parent and child can view the
videos together and learn together. This will support your
childs learning at home.
If the students miss the lessons or could not master the
concepts fully, they can select the questions that they still
have doubts to review their learning at home.

Supportive Parents
1) Spend time with your child daily (where possible) or at
least once a week to interact with your child regarding the
school activities or homework assignments.
2) To provide asknlearn access for the child to be engaged
in self-directed learning and consolidation of concepts.
3) Make Math alive (e.g. Use of coins in the canteen to buy
food). To provide opportunities to help pupils see how
Math concepts are applied in their daily lives.
4) Encourage your child even if he / she has difficulty
coping / understanding a problem. Praise your child even
if he / she makes minimal improvement.

5) Insist on neat and legible handwriting and work.

Writing neatly and legibly helps children avoid careless
mistakes.
6) Please sign your childs completed work/tests when they
are requested by your childs Math teacher. Your child will
feel encouraged as you show your concern. You are also
given timely feedback on your childs progress.
7) Your child needs to have 3 blue files for the following
worksheets:
1) MPAH. My Pals Are Here worksheets
2) Weekly word problems
3) Other practice papers
