Ten Minutes With...

The team at Originals give us an insight in to just how passionate they are about all things shiny...
What products and services do you offer at Originals?
We have quite a contemporary feel to our gallery as we offer handmade jewellery from our in-house workshop,
alongside British and international jewellery, watch designers and brands. Our showcases and walls are also home
to glass art, bronze sculptures, ceramics, original oils and contemporary wall art and leather goods such as jewellery
and watch boxes.
At our core is our love of coloured gem stone and diamond set pieces which we make in-house. I would say that
if the term gem-aholics existed, thats how we would be described. We like to show off our loose gemstones and
always have a selection on display which can be purchased, designed and made into your next favourite piece
to wear. Another strong line for us is diamond sales, whether they take the form of engagement rings, classic
stud earrings or investment stones. With long-established connections within the diamond industry, we can offer
diamonds at prices normally only found through the internet - we strongly feel that you should be able buy
diamonds at competitive prices with the reassurance of our experience as certied diamond specialists.
Having our workshops within the gallery means we can offer a full service from simple jewellery repairs to
remaking a much loved piece that needs new life. Quite often we are asked to take a collection of either old,
broken, unworn or inherited jewellery to melt down and redesign into a new piece or a suite of jewellery. On the
repair side we also offer stringing, watch repairs, engraving, and valuations.
What inspired you to start the business?
My parents actually - watching them build up their business from nothing in the hotel industry,
their work ethic and the enjoyment of seeing it succeed there really wasnt any other way I
could go - the only difference is that my future would be in art, not hotels.
What do you love about living and working in the local area?
Community, I love that I can walk out my front door and walk to work, I am denitely a
people person (probably from growing up in hotels) so I love the fact that it can take half an hour to walk 100
yards somedays. Im very proud of what we have achieved here in Odiham and the services we offer to the village
and surrounding area and we feel very lucky to be so well supported.
Any plans for the future?
My rst shop in Odiham was in 1989 and since then we have relocated three times - all within the High Street and during this time the business has grown from just me to a six strong team. I hope the future for Originals will
be bright and it continues long after I retire, not that thats anytime soon by the way
I still have a few good years left in me and I still love being on the bench and being creative.
What are your bestsellers around Valentines Day / Mothers Day?
Valentines is denitely diamonds and hearts - engagement rings and heart
pendants and earrings are alway going to be strong for us and now that
we are an Endless partner, the red leather bracelets and sparkly heart
charms do very well. For Mothers Day we nd that again Endless is a
strong seller, but so are pearls and some of the glass vases and
ornaments too.

The Sky Garden

I started my retreat business because Im passionate about introducing people to mindfulness,
as I know it works. I think a lot of people are curious but dont want to commit to an eight
week course, and this is where I can assist. I offer lessons in mindfulness and meditation
alongside a delicious nutritious lunch and the option to stay overnight.
Practicing mindfulness came about as a tool to help manage a chronic pain and fatigue
condition called Fibromyalgia, it has helped enormously.
Living in a beautiful and unique part of Odiham overlooking the chalk pits, is an obvious
location for a retreat setting. Many friends and family rave about the setting and atmosphere,
and ultimately leave feeling relaxed and restored.
Numerous people have enjoyed the one-day course, saying they have grasped a better
understanding of mindfulness and wish to learn more about it to apply the concepts to their
everyday life. They therefore feel more equipped to live in the present moment, enabling
them to manage their stress and anxiety better. Science has shown mindfulness can improve
relationships, as well as manage many health conditions including depression, stress and
anxiety.
The one day retreat costs 85 including lunch and refreshments.
The two day retreat costs 150 including overnight stay or 110 without. (Introductory rate)

food review

Carvery? The Raven has raised the bar.

The last thing you would want to do

the rst damp and grey Sunday after the holidays is cook,
so luckily I was invited to do a carvery food review at the local Raven Hotel.
As it was Sunday, we arrived at 12 to be sure to avoid
the queues. Luckily we did, as there was a function
for a hundred guests being held soon after our arrival
and locals started to pile in, laden with umbrellas and
waterproofs.
With my family accompanying me, I was delighted to
see that the Raven accommodated for little people with
their own menu and activities to keep them occupied.
There are two areas to the Raven, one with table
service, the other where you order at the bar. We
found ourselves a nice cubby hole towards the back
of the bar area. We promptly order two carveries and
Mac and Cheese for the Little One.The
Carvery is on offer for children too, but
on this particular day pasta was what his
taste buds craved.

taste all of them. The beef was medium to well done

and melted in the mouth, seasoned to perfection. The
pork came with a delicious crunchy crackling (a big tick
in my eyes) and although the meat was slightly salty for
my taste, it had kept its moisture. Last, and by no means
least, the turkey, YES turkey, was beautifully cooked and
juicy. The meal was well complimented by hearty gravy
drizzled on top.
We successfully piled our plates high and devoured the
lot, leaving our bellies entirely satised with the pickings.
The chef received compliments from all three of us;
delightfully pickled cabbage, and heavenly gravy were
clearly that extra mile that made the meal memorable.
When asked to comment on his Mac
and Cheese, the little one simply stated
yummy and proceeded to mop up the
remainder of his sauce with garlic bread.
We take this as a thumbs up from him.

Yummy!

As we joined the line, anticipating piled high plates, the

rst thing we noticed was the seasonal veg on offer.
Much to my husbands delight, there was not only red
cabbage, but also sprouts, both often not offered at
your everyday carvery due to their ability to divide a
crowd.
Other choices on offer were carrots, sizzling roast and
buttery mashed potatoes, cauliower and broccoli in
a creamy white sauce, Yorkshire puddings, and stufng,
as well as the usual condiments you expect to go with
a roast.

All in all, a great value, well-rounded and hearty meal.

Perfect for a family get together, Sunday gathering, or
a last minute homely roast without the hard work or
stress. Importantly, The Ravens usual menu is always on
offer to satisfy everyones taste.
If I had any advice to give, due to the popularity of the
Carvery, it would be to arrive as close to 12 as possible.
The restaurant soon lls up with hungry locals, meaning
you may have you queue and miss out on the best bits!

The hero of the meal had to be the meat. There were

three meat choices on offer and I was lucky enough to

JAKE WINKLE: EXHIBITING ARTISTTHEFRAME-GALLERY.CO.UK

11-27 MARCH 2016
When did you start painting and what motivates
you?
I started painting watercolours in 1993. I am motivated
by their translucent quality, the richness of its colour and
the immediacy of bold application.
How would you describe your style?
My style is contemporary/impressionistic. I paint the
world around me, and in particular, wildlife, but as artistic
interpretations and not photographic copies.
What do you consider to be the best painting
youve ever done?
My best painting is almost always the last one I have
produced.
Do you nd certain paper, paints or brushes make
a big difference to how you paint?
I use Arches rough watercolour paper as its absorbent
quality is lovely to use. Brushes have to be nest quality
sable to allow the most control over this difcult liquid
medium and I always use artist quality paints to ensure
longevity in the nished work.

What has painting given back to you?

Painting has given me a spiritual and material release for
my creative instincts as well as a lovely way to earn a
living. It is a lifestyle, not just a job.
What inspires your work?
I am inspired by shape, colour, mark making and
movement. I like wildlife because it allows me to explore
all of these qualities.
What are you currently working on?
I am currently working towards several major exhibitions.
I am increasingly producing works at a larger size of full
imperial which makes the nished framed image over a
metre wide.
What can we expect from your exhibition?
My exhibition will be full of joyful watercolours mainly
celebrating the diversity of wildlife, full of colour and
expressive mark making.

Jake Winkles exhibition runs from

Friday 11th March to Sunday 27th
March at The Frame Gallery.

BRITISH TOURING CAR

CHAMPIONSHIP OPPORTUNITY
Welch Motorsports racing history has spanned
over 30 years; John Welch having retired at the
top of his career in European rallycross with
two British Championships and numerous
International titles to his name. Launching on
March 22nd, the 2016 British Touring
Car Championships promises to be
fast, furious and, as always, full of
surprises. Johns son, Dan Welch, will
run for his sixth consecutive year in
the BTCC, visiting circuits all over
the country, and aiming to mirror his
fathers success.
The BTCC has captivated fans since 1958,
with only Formula 1 and NASCAR boasting
larger racing histories. In 2015 it claimed a UK
TV audience of 20.9 million with 233 hours of
airtime on ITV. The BTCC Facebook page has
over 108,000 followers, its Twitter 48,500 and
their website attracted almost 200,00 unique

Inside Our Titanic Topic

This term the Year 2 children are enjoying a history themed topic on
the Titanic. The topic started with the arrival of a mystery trunk in the
classroom. Nobody seemed to know who it belonged to, so we decided
to investigate!
Inside the trunk were some fascinating articles and clues as to its owner;
a long fur coat, white kid leather gloves, a second class boarding ticket,
a towel embroidered with the Titanic emblem, a vanity case containing
some interesting glass bottles, foot salve, glove stretchers and a dinner
menu. On further investigation the children noticed that the trunk was
bound for Southampton. The children loved guessing who it belonged
to and piecing together the clues. They were incredibly excited to be
handling some Titanic artefacts and had lots of questions to ask. With
so much that they wanted to nd out, they set about writing letters to
Sea City Museum in Southampton, asking for help.
The children will be using this fascinating topic as a stimulus for other
curriculum areas. They will be writing postcards from the ship, newspaper
articles about the disaster and creating their own boat stories. Maths
will be incredibly important in the calculation of passenger numbers,
food items needed and measurement of time, length and weight. In art
they will be creating watercolour boat pictures and papier mache toy
boats. The highlight of the term will be a trip to Sea City Museum where
we will be enjoying learning more about the disaster and experiencing
history workshops.

FIVE COMMON
SOCIAL MEDIA

MISTAKES
Have you been slogging away sharing updates on every
social network and not getting much back in return? Feel
like giving up? LET US HELP TURN YOUR EFFORTS IN TO RESULTS.
ONE - Expense V Investment?
As rm as it sounds, if you cant see the value and you dont invest the time and effort into this vital
resource your will not get results.
TWO - No social media strategy?
If you are going to achieve any form of success with your business social media practices you will always
need a plan of action.
THREE - No process for monitoring or reporting.
It is not sufcient to just post updates to Facebook or send a few tweets, whether it is your own
content or that which has been curated. Generally if your business is not using Analytics, it is safe to
say that you will not have an online marketing strategy. The question to ask here is, if you are not using
Analytics how can you measure the success of any social media activity and thereby adjust it accordingly
for maximum success.
FOUR - No Return On Investment (ROI) or Return On Engagement (ROE)!
If you consider the fact that your business does not have a social media strategy and is not using any
form of analytics, how can you expect to calculate the ROI? You will want to know for the pounds your
business invests, how many pounds that investment has generated.
FIVE - Anyone can do it!
Many businesses make the mistake of seeing social media as a young persons eld and pass the
updating of the business social networks to a young member of the team. If it were any other part of
your business communications, you would not choose an employee to carry out a task solely based
on their age.
In conclusion, if you can identify that your business is making any of the above ve mistakes, you are
now in a position to ensure that does not continue and you can go on to create a social media strategy
for your business. If you need support with strategy or getting going, take a look at our social media
services to help your business get the most value:
