The sense of taste
The sense of taste is one of a person's five senses. We taste with the help of taste-buds in the
tongue. There are four main kinds of taste: sweet, sour, salty, and bitter. All other tastes are just
mixtures of two or more of these main types.
The surface of the tongue has more than fifteen thousand taste-buds (or cells). These are
connected to the brain by special nerves which send the so-called 'tastes messages. When the
tongue comes into contact with food of any kind, the taste-buds will pick up the taste. The nerves
then send a message to the brain. This will make us aware of the taste. All this happens in just a
few seconds.
There are four kinds of taste-buds, each of which is sensitive to only a particular taste. These
four groups are located in different parts of the tongue.
The taste-buds for salty and sweet tastes are found round the tip of the tongue and along its sides.
Sour tastes can be picked up only at the sides of the tongue. The taste-buds of the bitter taste are
found at the innermost edge of the tongue. There are taste-buds at the centre of the tongue.
The senses of smell and sight can affect taste. The good smell of food increases its taste.
Similarly, attractive colours can make food appear tastier and more delicious. If food does not
smell good or is dull-coloured, it will look tasty and may not taste good at all.
Very hot or cold sensations can make the taste-buds insensitive. Food that is too hot or too cold,
when placed in the mouth, will have no tastes at all.

A. increase the taste of the food
B. affect the taste of the food

Integrated Pest Management

There is no best way to deal with pests in agriculture. Pesticides which are commonly used may
cause many problems. I think combining different management operations is the most effective
way to control pests.
Firstly, the chemicals in the pesticides may build up as residues in the environment and in the
soil which absorbs the chemicals. This reduces the quality of farm product.
Secondly, pests can gradually become resistant to pesticides. This means that newer and stronger
ones have to be developed.
Lastly, some pesticides affect non target plants and animals such as fish and bees. This affects
the ecology and environment as well.
So, understanding of ecology of an area helps a lot in pest control. Pesticides should be chosen
and applied carefully so that they don't affect the ecological balance and environment.
Therefore, integrated pest management is a safe and more effective option to fight pest in
agriculture and livestock.
30.

Which of the following is not directly affected by pesticides used?

The novel Frederica is full of surprises. When Frederica brings her younger siblings to
London determined to secure a brilliant marriage for her beautiful sister, she seeks out their
distant cousin the Marquis of Alverstoke. Lovely, competent, and refreshingly straightforward,
Frederica makes such a strong impression that to his own amazement, the Marquis agrees to help
launch them all into society.
This novel is a regency romance. There was a playful, light-hearted feel to this book that,
along with the engaging characters, totally charmed me.
At the beginning, the hero was a cynic, and the heroine was a bit too controlling of her
family (though always with the best of intentions). When being together, though, they brought
out the best in each other. As they spent time together, they fell in love almost without realizing
it.
A large number of characters were introduced at the beginning, but their relationships to
each other were clear and I was able to quickly sort them all out. The pacing was very good, and
the world-building was excellent. The author skillfully wove a lot of details about the time period
into the story (helped along in part by a young boy interested in the newest technologies of the
day).

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen is my favorite historical romance, but Frederica is
now my second favorite. If you like Pride and Prejudice, Id highly recommend that you give this
book a try.

A. To tell past events.

34. What is the relationship between Frederica and the Marquis of Alverstoke?
A.

35. What is implied about the writers favorite novel?

A. She likes Pride and Prejudice and Frederica.
B. She likes regency romance stories.
C. She prefers skillfully woved stories.
D. She recomends readers to read Frederica.
E. Pride and Prejudice is in her top list.
The following text is for question number 36 to 40.
There are differences of opinions on the Avian Flu. Some said this disease may claim 150
million deaths but there are others who said current alarm on avian flu is unwarranted as there is
no proof of spreading between humans.
According to United Nation's chief coordinator on bird flu said 150 million or more could
die from the disease, if a pandemic strikes. One of the frightening issues for a human flu
pandemic arising from avian influenza is its unpredictability.
It is difficult to estimate the death toll should H5N1 virus mutates into a form. Which can
be easily transmitted between human. It is not possible to predict whether a pandemic would
occur once or it would repeat. However, an epidemiologist recommended that Government
should take every possible precaution the threat of bird flu, seriously.
Contrary to all dire talks about avian flu pandemic coming, an Ecologist dismissed the
current panic as unsubstantiated and guess work.

Ecologists commented that H5N 1 virus still remains a bird virus and has no scientific
evidences of human-to-human transmission. They said there are billion of people across Asia
which only 118 are reported being affected by avian flu. So, how do theycalculate to show that
150 million or more death will come from avian flu. The global panic, according to the
Ecologist, is the result of "scare tactics" created by politicians, medical officers, and the media.
It is premature to predict the outcome of avian flu. Health scientist could confirm the
possibility of human-to-human transmission. The advice is to keep calm and stay alert because if
you do, you will weaken your resistance and reduce your immune system.

Bees are flying insects closely related to wasps and ants, and are known for their role in
pollination and for producing honey and beeswax. There are nearly 20,000 known species of
bees in nine recognized families though many are undescribed and the actual number is probably
higher. They are found on every continent except Antarctica, in every habitat on the planet that
