Anemergingissueineducationaltechnology,isracialandgenderequity.Eventhough
wehavecomealongwayinclosingtheracialandgendergap,therearestillhurdlesto
overcome.Ichosethisparticularissue,becauseIbelieveinequality(notonlyequalitybetween
thegenders,butalsoracialequality.)Asawoman,itisimportanttomethatmygendernotfall
behindagainandeverythingthatmypredecessorsworkedsohardtoachieve,gobythewayside.
Thisissueisimportanttoeducation,becauseyouwantstudentstobeabletoidentifywith
theimagestheyareseeinginwhatevertechnologytheyaregiven.Ifwepresentaonesided
pictureofforexample,allmaleengineersortechs,thengirlsaregoingtofeelthattheycannot
competeinthosefields.Ifwepresentonerace,thatisthesamekindoflogic.Regarding
womensrolesintheworkforce,accordingtothearticleEqualityintheVirtualWorkplace,
womenaredrasticallyunderrepresentedinleadershippositions,inthelegalfield,forinstance.
(Travis,2003).
Thearticlediscussessomeviewsthatsaytelecommutingistheanswertoclosingthese
gendergaps,butsomesaythattelecommutingisactuallycausingmoreofadivide.Icanseewhy
somearesayingthattelecommutingmaynotbetheanswer,becausethearticlestatesthat
telecommutingisprovidedasabenefittomalehighlevelemployees,whereasforthe
lowerlevelfemaleemployeesitisbeingusedbycompaniestoreducecosts.Thisresultsin
decreasedpayandbenefits.Thereshouldbemoreofanefforttoachievebalance,andusethe
availabletechnologyinapositive,equalway.
Regardingraceinequalities,accordingtothearticleCanAmericaEducateItselfoutof
Inequality,Eventhoughindustrialprocessesandtechnologicalinnovationsaccelerated
demandforworkerswithmoreadvancededucations,theexplosionofhighschooleducated
workersforcedrelativewagesdown.(Katz,2009)Employerswereputintothepositionof
power.Therewasnoleverageonthesideoftheemployees,particularlyyoungpeople.They
wereforcedtoworkwhateverhoursandwhateverpaytheemployeroffered.Thishasbeen
changingslightly,overthelastfewyears.Thingsarebeginningtoevenoutandthereismore
demandnowforemployeesthatpossessskillstheyhaveacquiredinschoolusingtechnological
advances.ThisisatrendIwouldliketoseecontinue.
